Ohio
Wesleyan 80, Chatham 58
Nov.
27, 2005
Sophomore
guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and junior guard Emily
Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) fueled a record-setting display of 3-point
shooting that led Ohio Wesleyan over Chatham in the consolation game of
the Marietta Turkey Shoot Tournament on Sunday in Marietta.
Ohio Wesleyan jumped to an early 7-0 lead on a putback by sophomore post
Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial), a Cooper 3-pointer and a bucket
by junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley), but the
Cougars rallied to tie the game at 12-12 as Liz Rizza and Erica Bilski
scored 5 points apiece. Chatham then took a 15-14 lead on Bilski's free
throw with 9:22 left in the first half.
Sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) answered with a 3-pointer to put
Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and freshman post Katie Hamilton (Marysville/Hilliard
Darby) followed with a basket for a 19-15 Bishop lead.
Kristin Pollack scored to bring Chatham within 19-17, but Cooper buried
a pair of 3-pointers and Lloyd contributed a 3-pointer and a basket that
stretched the Bishop lead to 30-19 with 3:21 left in the first half.
The Cougars closed to within 30-25, with Bilski sinking a 3-pointer and
a free throw to lead the way, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with 3-pointers
by Lloyd and senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) to
restore the 11-point margin.
Ohio Wesleyan led, 36-27, at halftime, and Cooper hit a 3-pointer and
a lay-in to open the second half, then Hamilton and Baker followed with
baskets to stretch the Bishop lead to 45-27, and Chatham would not threaten
again.
Cooper led the Bishops with 17 points, including a 5-for-9 effort from
beyond the arc. Cooper's 5 trifectas tied the school record previously
accomplished 10 times. Lloyd finished with 14 points, with 12 of them
coming from downtown, and dished out a team-high 4 assists. Messaros finished
with 11 points and Lester led the Bishops with 9 rebounds.
As a team, the Bishops went 15-for-59 from 3-point range, obliterating
both school and North Coast Athletic Conference records for 3-pointers
made and attempted. The old NCAC records were 13 made, set by Kenyon against
Asbury in 1995, and 39 attempted, set by Ohio Wesleyan last Tuesday at
Case Reserve; and the old school records were 10 made, which was accomplished
twice, and 39 attempted, set last Tuesday at Case Reserve.
Rizza shared the Falcon lead with 14 points and grabbed a team-high 10
rebounds, while Chelsea Viti also shared the team lead with 14 points.
Bilski and Pollack finished with 10 points apiece.
Cooper represented the Bishops on the all-tournament team.
