Ohio Wesleyan 82, Hiram 69

Freshman post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) scored a pair of baskets to cap an 11-2 run that helped Ohio Wesleyan break open a win over Hiram in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday in Hiram.

Sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) opened the game with a 3-pointer, and sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) sank a pair of free throws as the Bishops raced to a 5-1 lead less than a minute into the game.

The Bishops stretched their lead to 8-3 on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary), but Hiram answered with 6 straight points, getting 2 free throws from Cassie Bedard and buckets by Allison Davis and Michelle Kozempa to take a 9-8 lead with 14:18 left in the first half.

Lester hit a free throw to tie the game and junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) sank a pair of free throws to put Ohio Wesleyan to stay at 11-9 with 12:15 to go in the period.

Ohio Wesleyan held a 23-19 lead with 4:15 left in the half when the Bishops broke the game open. Cooper started the Bishop run with a 3-pointer and junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) hit a pair of free throws.

Sara Porter hit 2 free throws to bring the Terriers within 28-21, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with 2 free throws by Graf and Lawson's 2 buckets to take a 34-21 lead with 2:42 left in the period.

Sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) connected on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the half as Ohio Wesleyan took a 37-23 lead into the locker room, and the margin would remain in double figures throughout the remainder of the contest.

Cooper led the Bishops with 12 points, while Lloyd added 10 points and Lester also scored 10 points and had a team-high 3 assists. Sophomore guard Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) led the Bishops with 6 rebounds.

Bedard led Hiram with 19 points and Tania Carman scored 16 points. Kozempa and Stephanie Zunic each had 5 rebounds and Allison Davis led the Terriers with 2 assists.
