Ohio Wesleyan 63, Anderson 61

Sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) drilled a 3-pointer that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) sank free throws that provided the eventual margin of victory as the Bishops outlasted Anderson in non-conference action on Tuesday in Anderson, Ind.

Lester had sent the game into overtime with a bucket with :18 to play, tying the score at 52-52, and the Bishop defense did not allow the Ravens to get off a potential game-winning shot.

Anderson took an early lead in the overtime period, however, getting a pair of lay-ins by Jessica Hamman to take a 57-53 lead with 3:21 left in the extra session.

Ohio Wesleyan then held the Ravens scoreless from the field for over 3 minutes while chipping away at the deficit. Lester's 2 free throws brought Ohio Wesleyan within 57-55, and after Hamman hit a free throw for a 3-point Raven lead, the Bishops answered with a pair of charity tosses by Cooper to close within 58-57 with 2:01 to play, then got a free throw from junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson) to tie it at 58-58 with 1:31 remaining.

Anderson's Mandy Seward missed 2 free throws with 1:04 remaining, and on the Bishops' next possession, Graf buried a 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan a 61-58 lead with :42 to play.

Lester added a free throw with :18 left for a 62-58 Bishop lead, but Lauren Vail banked in a 3-pointer with :05 left to bring the Ravens within 62-61.

Anderson then fouled Cooper, who hit the first free throw for a 63-61 lead but missed the second, and Vail's 3-point attempt for the win at the buzzer was off the mark.

Graf drilled a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's first possession of the game and Lloyd added a free throw for an early 4-0 Bishop lead. Ohio Wesleyan still led, 16-14, with 9:43 left in the first half but did not score another basket during the period. Anderson got a 3-pointer and a lay-in by Vail, 4 free throws from Seward and finally 2 free throws from Vail in the waning seconds of the half that finished off an 18-1 spree that gave the Ravens a 32-17 lead at the intermission.

Not to be outdone, the Bishops came out for the second half and went on a 17-2 rampage to tie the game. Senior guard Jamie Rea (Delaware/Hayes) and sophomore guard Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) had 3-pointers, Lester contributed a 3-point play and a lay-in and Graf hit back-to-back lay-ins to finish off the run and tie the game at 34-34 with 11:37 left in regulation time.

The Ravens built a 7-point lead at 44-37 on Hamman's lay-in, but the Bishops came back once more, getting a Graf lay-in and a lay-in and a 3-pointer from Lloyd that tied the game at 47-47.

Hamman's lay-in and a free throw by Kayla Martin gave Anderson a 52-50 lead, setting up Lester's game-tying bucket and the overtime session.

Graf led the Bishops with a career-high 17 points, while Lester posted career bests of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Cooper led the Bishops with 3 assists.

Hamman led Anderson with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Vail finished with 14 points, Martin scored 12 points and Seward added 10 points.
