Allegheny 62, Ohio Wesleyan 47

Dec. 10, 2005

Sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) and freshman post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) hit 5 straight free throws to give the Bishops the lead, but Allegheny opened the second half with a 31-10 run and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Allegheny raced to a 7-0 lead, getting a pair of baskets from Courtney Steding and a 3-pointer by Valery Medwid in the first 4-plus minutes of play.

Ohio Wesleyan responded by scoring the next 9 points in a span of less than 2 minutes, with senior guard Amanda Nanney (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) kick-starting the Bishops with a pair of 3-pointers, sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) hitting a lay-in and sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) adding a free throw.

The Gators held an 18-17 lead on Meghan Vasilisin's jumper with 3:27 remaining when the Bishops made their move. Fouled on a shot right in front of the Gator bench, Baker stepped up to the line and drilled all 3
free throws for a 20-17 Bishop advantage. On the Gators' next possession, Lawson was fouled on a rebound and sank both free throws for a 22-18 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 2:02 left in the half.

Allegheny closed to within 22-20 at halftime on Medwid's lay-in, then tied the game early in the second half when Steding followed her own missed shot and scored on the putback.

Junior guard Rachel Messaros (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) gave the Bishops the lead with a 3-pointer, but Allegheny's Katie Kestler answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 25-25. Vasilisin added a lay-in and Caitlin Murtagh and Kestler followed with 3-point plays to increase the Gator lead to 35-27. Kristen Lyzen added a jumper and Murtagh hit a pair of free throws before Beth Van Parys' fast break lay-in stretched the margin to 41-27 with 12:085 remaining.

Sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) scored to bring the Bishops within 41-29, but Hilary Collins hit back-to-back lay-ins to give the Gators a 45-29 lead at the midway point of the half. All told, the Gators hit 11 of their first 14 shots of the second half, and of the 3 misses, 2 were put back for Allegheny baskets.

Messaros led the Bishops with 12 points and 5 rebounds, while s
enior guard Jamie Rea (Delaware/Hayes) led the Bishops with 3 assists.

Kestler led Allegheny with 15 points, while Steding had 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
