[ Emily Lloyd ]Junior guard Emily Lloyd (Canton/Massillon Jackson), sophomore post Kelli Lester (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and sophomore guard Molly Baker (Avon Lake) fueled a second-half rally that sliced a 17-point deficit to 5 points, but John Carroll held off the Bishop charge and went on to take a win over Ohio Wesleyan in the second round of the inaugural Bishop Classic on Friday at Branch Rickey Arena.

In Friday's opener, Mount Union ended the game with a 13-2 run to take a win over Wooster.

John Carroll threatened to run away with Friday's nightcap, breaking a 6-6 tie with consecutive baskets by Caitlin Hubach. Ohio Wesleyan answered with a bucket by freshman post Katie Hamilton (Marysville/Hilliard Darby), but the Blue Streaks then went on a 15-3 run over the next 7 minutes, with Tracey Prosinski contributing a 3-pointer and 2 lay-ins, Hubach adding a pair of buckets and Erin Zahariev capping the run with a lay-in that made it 25-11 with 7:38 left in the half.

The Blue Streaks would lead by as many as 17 points during the first half, but Ohio Wesleyan came back with a Lester free throw, a bucket by freshman post Laurel Lawson (Navarre/Fairless) and a Baker fast break hoop just before the first-half buzzer that brought the Bishops within 33-21 at halftime.

John Carroll extended its lead to 40-23 on Jessica Gibbons' fast break lay-in early in the second half, but Ohio Wesleyan fought back once more. Baker started the Bishop rally with back-to-back buckets, then Lawson hit a lay-in, Lester sank a pair of free throws and Lloyd got a lay-in to slice the deficit to 42-34.

After the teams traded points twice, Lester swished a 3-pointer to bring the Bishops within 46-41 with 9:47 to play.

The Blue Streaks answered with 7 straight points, getting a free throw and a lay-in from Hubach, a pair of free throws from Shayla Bell and a Zahariev lay-in to stretch the lead to 53-41 with 7:25 left.

Sophomore post Malley Adamsky (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) converted a 3-point play as Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 54-46 with 5:20 to go, but the Bishops would not score another basket until sophomore guard Steffi Graf (Poland/Seminary) hit a 3-pointer with :24 to play.

Lester led the Bishops with 16 points. Sophomore guard Lindsey Macklin (Columbus/Bexley) grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds and sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper (Columbus/Upper Arlington) dished out a team-leading 5 assists.

Mount Union started to heat up from outside at that point, getting a 3-pointer by Kyla Hogan to come within 5 points, and after the teams traded points, getting a 3-pointer by Lauren Friedrich to close within 42-40 with 7:18 remaining. After Angela Evans scored a Wooster basket, it was Friedrich connecting from downtown again, bringing the Purple Raiders within 44-43 with 6:25 to play.
