Ohio University 9, Ohio Wesleyan 6

March 2, 2007

Junior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) and junior third baseman Nick Collinger (Columbus/Whetstone) drove in runs during a ninth-inning rally that brought the Bishops within 9-6, but Ohio University withstood the threat and held on for a win in Ohio Wesleyan's season opener on Friday in Chillicothe.

The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Matt Stiffler's sacrifice fly, then added 4 runs in the second, opening the frame with 4 straight hits.

Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the fourth when junior third baseman Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by freshman third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves), took third on an infield out by freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson).

Ohio University answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Brandon Besl's 2-run homer down the rightfield line.

Junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) singled in a run in the fifth, then Ruygrok plated a run during the Bishops' 2-run eighth. After scoring twice in the inning, Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases with nobody out, but Bobcat reliever Matt Schlarb got out of the inning without any further damage.

After Collinger's infield out brought the Bishops within 9-6 in the ninth, Johnson moved to third on a wild pitch and Ruygrok followed with a walk. Freshman outfielder Daniel Hurst (Hamilton/Badin) then reached on catcher's interference to put the tying run on base, but Bobcat reliever Andrew Shisila retired sophomore first baseman Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) on an infield grounder to nail down the win.

Senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) went 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored to highlight the Bishop offense.

Junior righthander
Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.

Dusty Hammond went 3-for-5 and drove in 2 runs for the Bobcats. Schlarb was the winning pitcher in relief.
