[ Kyle Sherman ]Senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) slammed a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and give the Bishops the lead, but Carthage rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the inning for a win in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Port Charlotte, Fla.

In the nightcap, Sherman scored the winning run on a Red Men error in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bishops a split of the twinbill.

Sherman's leadoff shot in the sixth inning of the opener gave the Bishops a 4-3 lead, but Seth Romano led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and pinch-runner Chris Shannon moved to second on a sacrifice by Steve Coughlin. Freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) retired Jose Alba on an infield grounder for the second out, with Shannon taking third on the play, but Boe Baitinger ripped a triple down the rightfield line, scoring the tying run, and scored the go-ahead run when Anthony Gragnani followed with a single up the middle.

The Bishops threatened in the seventh, with freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) drawing a leadoff walk and freshman outfielder Daniel Hurst (Hamilton/Badin), in as a pinch-runner, moving to second on a sacrifice by senior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson), but Redmen pitcher Chris Krepline retired junior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) and junior shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) on fly outs to end the game.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the third on Sherman's RBI single and a 2-run double by junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne).

Carthage closed to within 3-2 on Baitinger's 2-run homer in the bottom of the third and tied the game in the fourth on Gragnani's RBI single.

Junior righthander
Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) started on the hill for Ohio Wesleyan, working 5.0 innings and scattering 7 hits while striking out 4 and walking 2. Struble was charged with the loss in relief.

Krepline pitched the complete game for Carthage, allowing 6 hits while fanning 5 and walking one.

In the nightcap, junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second, but the Red Men tied the game in the fourth on Alba's sacrifice fly and took a 2-1 lead on Chris Sadjak's RBI double in the fifth.

Ring belted an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.

Sherman opened the bottom of the seventh with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Dote, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by Carthage third baseman Tyler Yapp.

Ring was the winning pitcher in relief for Ohio Wesleyan. Junior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) worked the first 5.0 innings, allowing 6 hits.

Jordan Williams, the third of 4 Carthage pitchers, was charged with the loss.
