March 13, 2007

[ A.J. Dote ]Junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) and junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) belted bases-loaded triples to power Ohio Wesleyan over Concordia in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

In the nightcap, the Falcons scratched out single runs in the second, fifth and sixth frames to erase a 2-0 deficit and salvage a split of the twinbill.

Ohio Wesleyan erupted for 6 runs in the bottom of the second of the opener. Junior third baseman Nick Collinger (Columbus/Whetstone) led off with a walk and junior shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) followed with a homer for a 2-0 Bishop lead. Freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) singled, sophomore third baseman Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) walked and freshman outfielder Dustin Rogers-Little (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) singled to load the bases for McDaniel, who plated all 3 runners with shot down the rightfield line. Senior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) drove in McDaniel with a sacrifice fly.

Dote's 3-bagger in the fourth brought home Rogers-Little, who had singled; McDaniel, who had doubled; and senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto), who had walked to load the bases.

Ring went the distance on the mound for Ohio Wesleyan, scattering 5 hits.

In the nightcap, Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Paul reached on a 2-out error, sophomore catcher Josh Dougherty (Hilliard/Davidson) followed with a single and sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) doubled home both runners.

The Falcons got one run back in the bottom of the inning, tied the game in the fifth and took the lead on a bases-loaded single in the sixth.

Sophomore righthander Greg Vasami (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) started for the Bishops. Junior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) came on in the fifth and freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) relieved in the sixth and was charged with the loss.
