Ohio Wesleyan 8, Mount Union 4

March 29, 2007

Junior shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) drove in the go-ahead run and junior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) followed with a 2-run double to highlight a 4-run eighth inning and sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) tied a school record as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Mount Union in non-conference play on Thursday in Alliance.

With the score tied at 4-4, freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) singled with one out, went to third on a single by Hronis and scored on a single by Paul. After the runners moved up on a passed ball and freshman third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) walked to load the bases, Johnson lined a double to score Hronis and Paul. McComas then scored on the front end of a double steal to give the Bishops an 8-4 lead.

Mount Union had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Andy Warner, Thomas Pfaus and Nate McFarland.

The Bishops answered with 2 runs in the top of the second on RBI singles by McComas and Johnson, but the Purple Raiders made it a 4-2 game on Warner's RBI double in the bottom of the inning.

Ohio Wesleyan came back to tie the game in the third when junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) drew a one-out walk, junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) belted a run-scoring double and Ruygrok tied the game with an RBI single.

Junior lefthander Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) started on the mound for Ohio Wesleyan, working the first 5.0 innings and allowing 4 runs while striking out 4 and walking none. Junior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) and junior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) each worked 2.0 innings of scoreless relief to nail down the win.

Hronis went 5-for-5, tying the Bishop record for hits in a game last accomplished by Dote on April 9, 2006, at Denison.

Johnson was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and Ruygrok collected 2 hits.

Brett Thomas, who started and pitched the first 7.1 innings, was charged with the loss.
