Ohio Wesleyan 14, Earlham 3
Ohio Wesleyan 18, Earlham 7

March 31, 2007

Junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) cracked a 2-run homer to highlight a 7-run first inning that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a win over Earlham in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday night in Richmond, Ind.

In the nightcap, Wilkins drove in the Bishops' first run in the top of the first inning and added a 2-run double later in the game to help Ohio Wesleyan complete the sweep.

Sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) singled with one out in the top of the first inning of the opener and Wilkins followed with a homer to give Ohio Wesleyan a quick 2-0 lead. Junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne), senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) and freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) followed with singles, and after the second out of the inning, freshman third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) singled and junior shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) doubled before junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) lined a 2-run double.

The Bishops added 3 runs in the third, got RBI singles by Dote in the third and McDaniel in the fourth, and tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Dote and Paul each went 4-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan, while McDaniel drove in 4 runs and Sherman was 3-for-3.

Freshman righthander Tyler Smith (Bryan) pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, scattering 8 hits while fanning 12 and walking 4.

In the first inning of the nightcap, McDaniel led off with a single, stole second and scored on Wilkins' one-out single. Wilkins would come around to score on a double by Sherman as the Bishops led, 2-0, after a half-inning.

Ohio Wesleyan added 4 runs in the second, with Paul, Hronis and Dote collecting RBI singles, and scored 5 times in the third, highlighted by Dote's 2-run triple, in taking an 11-0 lead.

Earlham scored twice in the bottom of the third, but Ohio Wesleyan got those runs back on Wilkins's 2-run double in the fifth, and the Bishops put the game out of reach with 2 runs in the sixth and 3 in the seventh.

Wilkins and Dote drove in 3 runs apiece, while McDaniel and Hronis collected 3 hits apiece.

Senior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing 8 hits and 6 runs while striking out 2 and walking 2, to earn the mound decision. Freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) worked the final 2.0 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 4 while walking one.
