Ohio Wesleyan 28, Earlham 3
April
1, 2007
Senior
second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) belted a 2-run
triple and a 2-run homer to help power Ohio Wesleyan over Earlham in the
opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader
on Sunday in Richmond, Ind.
In the nightcap, Sherman slammed 2 home runs to help the Bishops complete
the sweep of the doubleheader and the series, raising their record in
the NCAC West Division to 6-0.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 5-0 lead in the third inning of the opener, with
Sherman's 2-run triple the big hit. Junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto),
junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) and freshman
catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) also had RBI doubles
in the inning.
Sherman's 2-run homer capped a 5-run fourth inning, and McDaniel's 2-run
single keyed the Bishops' 5-run fifth frame.
Ohio Wesleyan wrapped up its scoring with a 2-run homer by junior third
baseman Caleb Douce (Caledonia/River Valley) in the seventh.
Junior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) worked the first
6.0 innings, allowing 8 hits and 7 runs, to collect the mound decision.
Freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) worked a scoreless
seventh inning.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when
Sherman tripled and scored on a ground out by Ruygrok, and junior shortstop
Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) singled home freshman third baseman
Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) later in the inning.
Earlham closed to within 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, stringing together
a single, a double and an infield out, but Ohio Wesleyan answered with
8 runs in the top of the third to break the game open. McDaniel lined
a 2-run double and sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward)
hit a 3-run homer to highlight the inning.
The Bishops added 3 runs in the fourth, with Sherman leading off with
a home run and Paul hitting a 2-run shot later in the inning.
Senior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) had a 2-run double during
the Bishops' 6-run fifth, sophomore catcher Pat Coakley (Newtown, Conn./Bridgton
Academy) smacked an RBI triple during Ohio Wesleyan's 2-run sixth, and
Ring had a 2-run double during the Bishops' 7-run seventh.
Hronis had 4 hits and drove in 4 runs, while Ring also drove in 4 runs.
McDaniel went 4-for-7, tying the Ohio Wesleyan single-game record for
at-bats previously accomplished 4 times, most recently by Si Kille in
a 12-inning game at Marietta on April 24, 1994.
Ohio Wesleyan's 28 runs tied the school record for runs in a 7-inning
game, set against St. John Fisher on March 11, 2001.
Junior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) worked
the complete game, scattering 11 hits and allowing 3 runs while striking
out 7 and walking none.
