Otterbein 10, Ohio Wesleyan 9

April 4, 2007

Junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) singled home a run to give the Bishops a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the eighth, but Otterbein rallied for 2 runs in the ninth and held on for a non-conference win on Wednesday at Littick Field.

With the game tied, 8-8, in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) lined a one-out single and scored on Wilkins's double to left center. Wilkins moved to third on a ground out but was stranded there.

The Cardinals got the tying run aboard in the ninth when Kyle Dyer's grounder went through the legs of freshman third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves). One out later, Pat Connor singled to left center, with pinch-runner Vince Eckel advancing to third and Connor taking second on the throw. After the second out, Dan Lassak lashed a pinch-hit double to right center to score both runners.

Trevor Horn came on for Otterbein to preserve the lead and got the first two batters looking, hit McComas, then retired senior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) on a fly ball to end the game.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on Wilkins's RBI ground out, but the Cardinals tied the game on Chris Kovanda's RBI single in the second and took a 2-1 lead on Bobby Wright's sacrifice fly in the third.

The Bishops answered with a 2-out RBI single by
junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) in the third, then took a 5-2 lead in the fourth with a 2-run single by junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) and another Wilkins RBI ground out.

Otterbein re-took the lead with 5 runs in the fifth, highlighted by 2-run singles by Chris Martin and Brandon Mauck.

Ring countered with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, giving Ohio Wesleyan an 8-7 lead, but the Cardinals tied it at 8-8 on Connor's solo shot in the seventh.

McDaniel went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI for Ohio Wesleyan. Wilkins and Ring drove in 3 runs apiece and Hronis and freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) each had 2 hits.

McComas tied a school record when he was hit by Otterbein pitches 3 times, equaling the mark set by Ryan Missler at Allegheny in 1998.

Connor went 4-for-4 and scored 4 times to highlight the Otterbein offense.

Ring was charged with the loss, his first in 5 decisions this season. Freshman righthander Tyler Smith (Bryan) started and worked the first 4.0 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. McDaniel worked 0.2 innings and junior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) pitched 2.1 innings for the Bishops.

J.J. Mathews, the third Otterbein pitcher, received the win, and Horn was credited with a save.
