Denison 11, Ohio Wesleyan 9 (9)
Ohio Wesleyan 9, Denison 8

April 15, 2007

Sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) belted an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, but Denison pushed across 2 runs in the top of the ninth and held on to take the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Sunday at Littick Field.

In the nightcap, junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force across the game-winning run and cap a 5-run seventh-inning rally that gave Ohio Wesleyan a split of the twinbill.

Denison took a 2-0 lead on Chris Day's home run in the top of the first inning of the opener.

The Bishops got one run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by junior shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy), and after the Big Red stretched the lead to 3-1 on an RBI single by Tony Christopher in the third, Ohio Wesleyan evened the game at 3-3 on an RBI single by senior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) in the bottom of the third.

Justin Held's grand slam gave Denison a 7-3 lead in the fourth, but the Bishops answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and tied the game on Ring's 3-run homer in the fifth. The Bishops added a run later in the fifth inning, taking an 8-7 lead when McDaniel walked and scored when Denison leftfielder Jake Mihalov dropped a fly ball off the bat of Hronis.

The Big Red tied the game on an RBI double by Christopher in the sixth and took the lead on Tim LaBolt's RBI double in the seventh.

Ohio Wesleyan evened the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh as McDaniel reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Hronis's double to the wall in left center. After an intentional walk to senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto), junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) struck out to end the inning.

The Bishops threatened in the eighth, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Denison's Troy Testerman pitched out of the jam to preserve the tie.

Denison took the lead in the top of the ninth when Christopher reached on Hronis's throwing error and Andy Johnson followed with a home run.

Sherman doubled with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but Denison's Mike Hundley fanned Wilkins to end the threat and the game.

Ring and freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) each went 3-for-5 for Ohio Wesleyan, with Ring driving in 4 runs.

Freshman righthander Tyler Smith (Bryan) started on the mound for Ohio Wesleyan, working 6.0 innings and allowing 8 runs while walking 5 and striking out 1. Ring came on to open the seventh inning and fanned 5 in 3.0 innings of relief, and was charged with the loss.

Testerman was the winning pitcher in relief for Denison, with Hundley working a scoreless ninth to pick up a save.

In the nightcap, Sherman ripped an RBI double in the first and junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) added a 2-run double in the third for a 3-2 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Denison took the lead with 3 runs in the fourth on a 2-run homer by Andrew Pakla and a solo shot by Day, and the Big Red added 3 more runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to Pakla, an RBI ground out by LaBolt and a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Aidan Lucas that made it 8-3.

Sherman's solo homer in the bottom of the fifth brought the Bishops within 8-4.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hronis reached on an infield single and Sherman followed with a single to left. After the runners moved up on a wild pitch, Ring plated Hronis with a single to shortstop.

Hundley relieved Big Red starter James Clear at that point and walked Dote to load the bases before hitting Ruygrok with a pitch, forcing home Sherman to make it an 8-6 game.

Lucas relieved Hundley and walked freshman third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves), forcing home Ring for an 8-7 score. Lucas struck out freshman outfielder Dustin Rogers-Little (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) for the second out, but Paul followed with a walk to force home Dote with the tying run, then Lucas hit McDaniel with a pitch to force home Ruygrok with the winning run.

Sherman went 3-for-4 and drove in 2 runs for the Bishops, while McDaniel and Hronis collected 2 hits apiece.

Junior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) started on the mound for the Bishops, working 4.1 innings and allowing 8 runs while striking out 6 and walking 4. Freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) worked 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first collegiate win.

Hundley, the second of 3 Denison pitchers, was charged with the loss.
