Denison 11, Ohio Wesleyan 10 (8)
Ohio Wesleyan 6, Denison 3

April 18, 2007

Junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) drove in 5 runs as Ohio Wesleyan erased a 9-0 deficit, but Denison tallied a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and held off a Bishop rally in the bottom of the inning to take the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Wednesday at Littick Field.

In the nightcap, junior shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) lashed a bases-loaded triple to cap a 5-run fifth that gave the Bishops a split of the twinbill.

Denison took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener on a 3-run homer by Jake Mihalov, and the Big Red added 6 runs in the third, with Tony Christopher's 2-run single the big hit.

Dote slammed a 3-run homer in the bottom of the inning, scoring Paul, who had been hit by a pitch, and junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto), who had singled.

In the Bishop fourth, Paul doubled with one out and McDaniel followed with a walk before Dote drove a ball down the rightfield line to score both runners. Dote would later score on a single by senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) to pull Ohio Wesleyan within 9-6.

Senior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) crushed a solo homer in the fifth to bring the Bishops within 9-7, and Ohio Wesleyan tied the game in the sixth as Sherman reached on a fielder's choice, sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) doubled him home, and Hronis scored on Ring's single through the left side.

The Bishops challenged in the seventh, loading the bases for Dote, who struck out swinging to end the inning.

Denison re-took the lead in the eighth as Aidan Lucas dropped a 2-out single to center and pinch-runner John Kester stole second and scored on a single by Park Smith. Smith took second on the throw to the plate and scored on Justin Held's single.

Hronis singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth, and Ring followed with a comebacker to Denison pitcher Troy Testerman, who threw short of second base for an error, leaving all hands safe. One out later, freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) singled home Hronis, with Ring taking third on the play, but freshman third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) flied to right to end the game.

Dote went 3-for-5 with 5 RBI for Ohio Wesleyan, while Hronis and Ring also collected 3 hits apiece.

Freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon), who had pitched 5.0 innings of scoreless relief before Denison's 2-out rally in the eighth, was the losing pitcher.

Testerman was the winning pitcher in relief for Denison.

In the nightcap, the Big Red took a 2-0 lead on Lucas's RBI single in the first and Chris Day's sacrifice in the third.

Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard with a McComas triple and a McDaniel ground out in the bottom of the third.

The Bishops took the lead for good in the fifth. Junior second baseman Jerrell Johnson (Shaker Heights) led off with a single, and one out later, junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) singled. McDaniel plated the tying run with a sacrifice fly and Hronis doubled in Wilkins to give the Bishops a 3-2 lead. After an intentional walk to Sherman, Dote walked to load the bases for Paul, who chased home all 3 runners with a triple down the rightfield line.

Ring pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, raising his record to 5-2.

Andy Johnson was the starting and losing pitcher for Denison.
