Ohio Wesleyan 9, Wabash 2
Wabash 9, Ohio Wesleyan 3

April 21, 2007

Freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) and freshman third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) drove in 2 runs apiece as Ohio Wesleyan built a 9-0 lead and went on to win the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader against Wabash on Saturday in Crawfordsville, Ind.

In the nightcap, the Little Giants built a 7-0 lead and went on to salvage a split of the twinbill.

The Bishops took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the opener when junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) walked and sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) before senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) lashed a drive on which McDaniel scored but Hronis got cut down at the plate, with Sherman steaming into third with a triple. Junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) followed with an infield single to score Sherman, and after junior shortstop Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) singled Dote to third, Ruygrok drove in Dote with an infield grounder.

Ohio Wesleyan added 6 runs in the fourth, opening with a double by senior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson), who took third on Wabash centerfielder David Culp's throwing error and scored on a wild pitch. The Bishops loaded the bases on a single by Hronis, a walk to Sherman and a single by Dote before bases-loaded walks to Paul and Ruygrok made it 6-0. After Dote scored on a wild pitch, McComas finished the rally with a 2-run single down the leftfield line.

Jake Thomas had an RBI single to highlight Wabash's 2-run sixth inning.

Junior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) fired a 3-hitter, striking out 6 and walking 3, to take the mound decision for Ohio Wesleyan.

Joey Niezer was the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash.

The nightcap saw the roles reversed, as the Little Giants built a 7-0 lead in support of T.J. Siple, who fired a 3-hitter of his own.

Wabash took a 1-0 lead on Matt Dodaro's RBI double in the first, added to the lead on Thomas's solo homer in the third and broke the game open with 5 runs in the fifth, with Scott Hamilton's 2-run double the big hit.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied in the sixth, loading the bases on Ring's leadoff single, Sherman's hit by pitch and Dote's walk. All 3 runners scored on a ball hit by Paul, which was misplayed by Little Giant first baseman Shaun Rico.

Culp finished off the scoring with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman righthander Tyler Smith (Bryan) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.

Siple finished with a 3-hitter, striking out 4 and walking 2
