Ohio Wesleyan 24, Wabash 4

April 22, 2007

Senior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) pitched a complete-game win and helped his own cause by driving in 6 runs as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wabash in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Sunday in Crawfordsville, Ind.

In the nightcap, junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) led off the game with a home run and junior outfielder Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) blasted a grand slam to highlight the Bishops' 28-hit attack as Ohio Wesleyan completed the sweep.

Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning of the opener as McDaniel was hit by a pitch and junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) followed with singles. Ring plated McDaniel with a fielder's choice and Paul lofted a sacrifice fly to score Dote for a 2-0 Bishop lead.

Wabash answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Jake Thomas's RBI single and an RBI double by Shaun Rico.

The Bishops bounced back with 5 runs in the top of the second on Ring's bases-clearing double and a 2-run homer by senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto). Ohio Wesleyan added 3 more scores in the fourth, highlighted by Ring's RBI single, and tacked on 3 additional runs in the fifth, with Ring and Paul driving in runs.

Ring went 2-for-5 with 6 RBI to spearhead the Ohio Wesleyan offense. Hronis was 3-for-4 and Sherman and freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) had 2 hits apiece. Ring scattered 13 hits in working the complete game. He struck out 5 and walked none.

In the nightcap, the Bishops posted 9 runs in the top of the first inning. McDaniel opened the game with a home run and doubled in a run later in the frame. Dote had a pair of singles in the inning, plating 2 runs with the second one, and Ruygrok doubled in 2 runs.

Wabash got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first as Kyle Rush led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch, but before the Little Giants would score again, Ohio Wesleyan would tally 9 more times.

Ohio Wesleyan scored 4 runs in the second, with freshman outfielder Daniel Hurst (Hamilton/Badin) and Dote singling in runs, and added 5 runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to Sherman and Paul's grand slam. Sherman doubled home a run during Ohio Wesleyan's 4-run sixth and freshman third baseman Eric McComas (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) singled home a run during the Bishops' 2-run seventh.

McDaniel and Dote each had 4 hits and 3 RBI, while Paul was 3-for-4 and drove in 5 runs. Ruygrok drove in 3 runs and Hurst finished with 3 hits and 2 RBI.

Freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) worked the first 6.0 innings, allowing 7 hits and striking out 6 while walking 4
