Ohio Wesleyan 15, Wittenberg 3
Ohio Wesleyan 3, Wittenberg 1

April 29, 2007

[ Kyle Sherman ]Senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) slammed 2 home runs and sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) cracked a grand slam to lead Ohio Wesleyan over Wittenberg in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Sunday at Littick Field.

In the nightcap, Sherman drove in all 3 Ohio Wesleyan runs and senior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) shut down the Wittenberg offense to help the Bishops complete the sweep.

The sweep gave the Bishops the NCAC West Division title for the second straight season. Ohio Wesleyan will host Allegheny in a semifinal series of the NCAC tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Littick Field.

Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener as junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) led off with a walk, and one out later, Sherman launched a home run to left center to put the Bishops on the scoreboard. Ring followed with a double, moved to third on an infield out and scored on a single by junior outfielder Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy).

Wittenberg closed to within 3-2 on Kory Winter's 2-run homer, but the Bishops got those runs back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on 3 singles before Sherman plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Ring knocked in a run with an infield ground out.

The Bishops tacked on 4 runs in the third when freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) singled, freshman third baseman Jared Turner (Versailles) was hit by a pitch and McDaniel reached on an infield single before Hronis sent a drive down the leftfield line and over the fence for a 9-2 Bishop lead.

Ruygrok singled in a run and junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) belted a 3-run homer during Ohio Wesleyan's 4-run fourth, and Sherman smashed a solo homer and Ruygrok plated a run with a fielder's choice in the fifth inning.

Sherman was 2-for-2 with 4 RBI, while Hronis went 2-for-5 with 4 RBI.

Junior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School), who had fired a no-hitter in his last outing against Wittenberg on March 25, pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan. He scattered 8 hits and allowed 3 runs while striking out 8 and walking 5.

In the nightcap, the Bishops again jumped to a first-inning lead. McDaniel and junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) singled before Sherman plated both runners with a double down the leftfield line.

Wittenberg closed to within 2-1 with an unearned run in the second, but Ring slammed the door after that, not allowing a runner past second base during the final 5 innings of play.

The Bishops added an insurance run in the fifth as McDaniel led off with a double, moved to third on Dote's sacrifice and scored on Sherman's single.

McDaniel was 3-for-3, while Sherman was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI.

Ring tossed a 3-hitter, striking out 2 and walking 2
