Otterbein 10, Ohio Wesleyan 8

May 2, 2007

Junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) slammed a 2-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to give the Bishops 8-7 lead, but Otterbein got 3 runs in the bottom of the inning and took a non-conference decision on Wednesday in Westerville.

With the Bishops trailing, 7-6, going into the eighth inning, junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) lined a one-out single and Dote followed with a shot over the rightfield fence to give Ohio Wesleyan an 8-7 lead.

The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the inning as Brandon Mauck drew a leadoff walk and Chris Kovanda followed with a single down the leftfield line. Ben Titus then followed with a homer to right for a 10-8 Otterbein lead.

Ohio Wesleyan had jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. McDaniel led off the game by crushing a drive to right center and out of the park. Dote followed with a walk, and one out later, senior outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) singled before sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) yanked a double down the leftfield line to score both runners.

Otterbein closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning as Bobby Wright drew a 2-out walk, Jerry Tulga doubled in Wright and Chris Martin singled home Tulga. The Cardinals tied the game in the third on Kovanda's RBI single.

The Bishops came back with a 2-out rally of their own in the fourth. Junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) and junior third baseman Nick Collinger (Columbus/Whetstone) singled and McDaniel was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Dote, who singled down the leftfield line to score 2 runs. Senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) followed with a single to score McDaniel for a 6-3 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

The Cardinals evened the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Mauck and a 2-out, 2-run single by Wright, then took a 7-6 lead in the fifth on a single, a double and an infield out.

McDaniel went 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored, while Dote was 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and Sherman was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Freshman righthander Tyler Smith (Bryan) worked the first 6.0 innings, striking out 1 and walking 2. Freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon), who came on in the seventh, was charged with the loss
