Ohio
Wesleyan 10, Allegheny 5
May
5, 2007
Senior
second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) belted a solo home
run to break at 4-4 tie and put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay as the Bishops
defeated Allegheny in the first game of a North Coast Athletic Conference
tournament semifinal series on Saturday at Grove City High School.
The game was moved to Grove City High School after rain on Saturday morning
rendered Littick Field unplayable. The series returns to Littick Field
on Sunday, with Game 2 scheduled for 1 p.m. and Game 3, if necessary,
to follow.
Allegheny took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Brian Schmidt singled,
moved to second on an infield out and scored on James Fago's single.
Ohio Wesleyan responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning as junior
outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) led off with a single and stole
second. Sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) singled
McDaniel to third, and Sherman plated McDaniel with a sacrifice fly. Senior
outfielder Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) singled before junior shortstop
Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy) launched a 3-run homer for a 4-1
Bishop lead.
The Gators tied the game in the fourth on RBI singles by John Hess and
Pete Obourn and a sacrifice fly by Mike Pereslucha.
Sherman led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run, and the Bishops
plated another run in the inning on doubles by Ring and freshman catcher
Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek).
Ohio Wesleyan added 3 more runs in the seventh, with junior first baseman
A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) smashing a 2-run double and
Ring following with an RBI single, and wrapped up the scoring in the seventh
on doubles by Ruygrok and McDaniel.
McDaniel and Ring each went 4-for-5, while Hronis, Dote and Ruygrok collected
2 hits apiece. Paul drove in 4 runs for the Bishops.
Junior righthander Xander Jones (Pomfret, Conn./Pomfret School) started
and worked the first 7.0 innings, scattering 7 hits and striking out 9
while walking 3, to collect the win. Junior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St.
Xavier) finished up with 2.0 innings of hitless relief, striking out 4.
