Ohio Wesleyan 9, Allegheny 1

May 6, 2007

Senior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) held Allegheny to 2 hits over the first 7.2 innings and helped his own cause by driving in a run as the Bishops defeated the Gators in the second game of a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament semifinal series on Sunday at Littick Field.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to the NCAC tournament final against Wooster, scheduled for Thursday and Friday at Denison University in Granville.

Allegheny took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with 1 out on singles by Alex Herrnberger and Pete Obourn and a walk to Zach Skowvron before Mike Pereslucha lofted a fly ball to deep right center, scoring Herrnberger.

Those 2 singles would be the last hits for Allegheny in the game. Ring allowed 2 baserunners in the third, then retired 15 straight Gator batters before being relieved with 2 out in the eighth.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the top of the third. Junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a squeeze by junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto). After McDonald stole second, sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) grounded to Gator third baseman Perelucha, who threw wildly to first, scoring McDonald and sending Hronis to second. Senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) singled in Hronis for a 3-1 Bishop lead.

The Bishops added a run in the sixth. Senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) walked with one out and took third on a single by junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne). Ring followed with a smash up the middle that caromed off Gator pitcher John Hess to shortstop Brian Schmidt. Schmidt forced Dote at second but his throw to first was too late to get Ring, with Sherman scoring on the play.

Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases with none out in the seventh. Freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) singled, Wilkins was hit by a pitch, and freshman outfielder Daniel Hurst (Hamilton/Badin) laid down a sacrifice bunt, with Gator catcher Herrnberger throwing wide of first base. Ruygrok scored on a wild pitch, with Wilkins moving to third and Hurst to second. McDaniel grounded out to first base, with the runners holding, and Hronis grounded to Schmidt, whose throw home was in the dirt, allowing Wilkins to score. Hurst later scored on a wild pitch for a 7-1 Bishop lead.

The Bishops tacked on 2 more runs in the eighth on a Ruygrok single, a Wilkins double and a McDaniel single.

McDaniel was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI, while Wilkins had 2 hits and scored 3 runs.

Ring started and worked the first 7.2 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 6 while walking 2, to move to 8-2 on the season. Freshman righthander Matthew Struble (Defiance/Edon) finished up with 1.1 innings of hitless relief, striking out 1
