Wooster 13, Ohio Wesleyan 4

May 10, 2007

Junior outfielder Brent Wilkins (Fairview Park/Fairview) singled in a run to give Ohio Wesleyan an early 1-0 lead, but Wooster took the lead with 4 runs in the third and pulled away with 6 runs in the seventh to take the first game of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament championship series on Thursday at Denison University in Granville.

Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is set for noon on Friday in Granville. If Ohio Wesleyan wins Game 2, a winner-take-all Game 3 would follow 30 minutes later. The winner of the series takes not only the NCAC championship but the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III tournament.

Ohio Wesleyan jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second when senior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson) reached on an infield single, took second on a sacrifice by junior third baseman Donnie Paul (Lewis Center/Olentangy), moved to third on a balk by Wooster starter Adam Samson, and scored on Wilkins's single.

Wooster took the lead with 4 runs in the third. Shaun Swearingen's 2-run homer put the Fighting Scots ahead to stay, and Wooster's John Quimby lined a 2-run double later in the inning.

Dan Skulina led off the Wooster fourth inning with a solo homer, and Jake Sankal's RBI double later in the inning increased the Fighting Scot lead to 6-1.

Freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) slammed his first collegiate home run in the fifth, bringing the Bishops within 6-2, but Wooster got that run back in the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of Ohio Wesleyan errors on the same play.

The Bishops threatened in the sixth, with sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) reaching on a one-out error by Wooster second baseman Quimby and Ring following with a single. Paul followed with a double to score both runners, slicing the deficit to 7-4, but Paul was stranded at second base.

Wooster put the game out of reach with 6 runs in the seventh, putting together 6 hits, a walk and an error, with Matthew Johnson's 2-run single the key hit in the inning.

Ring, Wilkins and junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) each had 2 hits for Ohio Wesleyan.

Ring was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops, allowing 5 runs in 3.0 innings of work. Junior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) finished up on the mound, striking out 5 and walking 4 over the final 6.0 innings
