Mount St. Joseph took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Neil Gamble and Michael Mayer singled, moved up to second and third on an infield out by Seth DeBra, and scored on a single by Nick Weimer.

Ohio Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the inning, with each of the first 3 Bishop batters smacking base hits. Junior outfielder Joey McDaniel (Dublin/Scioto) led off with a single and stole second, then scored on a single by junior first baseman A.J. Dote (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne). Senior second baseman Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) followed with a double to the gap in left center, but Dote was thrown out trying to score on the play, and Sherman was subsequently thrown out trying to steal third base.

The Lions added 2 runs in the top of the second when Joe Imhoff led off with a double and, one out later, Rick Pate followed with a single. Ryan Meyer grounded out, scoring Imhoff and moving Pate to second, and Gamble followed with a single through the left side to score Pate.

The Bishops took the lead in the bottom of the second as Ring walked, freshman catcher Steve Ruygrok (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) singled and freshman outfielder Daniel Hurst (Hamilton/Badin) laid down a bunt single that Lion pitcher Todd Schwertman threw away for an error, allowing Ring to score and Ruygrok to take third. That was it for Schwertman, who was relieved by Tim Murphy, and McDaniel greeted Murphy with a 3-run homer to rightfield, putting the Bishops ahead, 5-4.

Weimer led off the top of the sixth with a solo homer down the leftfield line to tie the game at 5-5, and the Lions took the lead when Nick Katsetos and Matt Hall walked, and the runners moved up on a double steal. Sophomore shortstop Logan Hronis (Rocky River/St. Edward) cut down Katsetos at the plate trying to score on an infield grounder by Pate, but Hall scored on a wild pitch for a 6-5 lead.

The Bishops threatened in the seventh, getting runners on second and third with nobody out when McDaniel's bouncer down the first base line was fielded by Lion first baseman DeBra, who flipped wildly to the bag for an error. Dote followed with a bunt down the third base line, and Lion third baseman Imhoff's throw ticked off DeBra's glove for an error, with McDaniel heading to third and Dote checking in at second. Mount St. Joseph escaped from the jam when Sherman lined to Imhoff, who beat McDaniel back to the third base bag for a double play, and Hronis's fly ball down the leftfield line was hauled in by Hall.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the eighth when junior third baseman Matt Rhode (Port Clinton) drew a walk with one out. Mount St. Joseph brought in closer Steve Matre, and Ruygrok greeted Matre with a single up the middle before Wilkins drove a ball over the head of Lion centerfielder Gamble to score both runners for a 7-6 Bishop lead.

The Lions threatened in the ninth, eventually loading the bases with one out. Pate was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and Meyer slashed a single through the left side. Gamble sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Mayer was intentionally walked to set up the force, and the strategy worked to perfection when DeBra bounced into a game-ending double play.

McDaniel went 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI, while Ruygrok was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and Dote and Sherman also collected 2 hits apiece.

Senior righthander Sean Ring (Hilliard/Davidson)
started on the mound for the Bishops, allowing 8 hits through 5.1 innings while striking out 4 and walking 2. Freshman righthander Tyler Smith (Bryan) came on in the sixth and allowed 1 hit over 2.2 innings to pick up the win, and junior righthander Sean Speed (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) got the final 3 outs for his first save of the season.

Matre was charged with the loss in relief for Mount St. Joseph.
