[ Play of the Game ]Wooster 24, Ohio Wesleyan 0

Oct. 7, 2006

Justin Schafer threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Ferns to put Wooster on the scoreboard and Dustin Sheppard ran for a pair of third-quarter scores that put the game out of reach as the Fighting Scots topped Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Selby Field.

The Fighting Scots got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter, when Schafer's scoring pass to Ferns in the back corner of the end zone broke the scoreless tie with 1:36 left in the period. The play capped a 7-play, 45-yard drive that included a pair of completions by Schafer for first downs, one to Ben Schrock for 10 yards on a second-and-7 call and the other to Greg Peltz for 16 yards on second-and-10 from the Ohio Wesleyan 32.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened on its next possession, driving to a first down on the Wooster 16-yard line with the help of a 27-yard connection from junior quarterback Steve Hymes (Barberton/Massillon Washington) to junior split end Zach Dennis (Jefferson) as well as a 7-yard run by senior halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) and a 4-yard burst by Hymes. But on first down from the 16, Hymes was sacked by Evan Watson for a loss of 13, and Hymes pass on third down was intercepted in the end zone by Keith Adams.

Wooster dodged a pair of bullets on its next possession. On first-and-10 from the Wooster 32, senior defensive end Owen Case (Marion/River Valley) hit Schafer in the backfield, forcing a fumble, but Schafer covered the ball at the Wooster 21. On the next play, Schafer found Orlando Jones for 24 yards and a first down. Later in the same series of plays, Schafer's pass was picked off by senior cornerback Tom Thome (Macedonia/Nordonia), but an offside penalty on Ohio Wesleyan wiped out the turnover. On the next play, Schafer found Peltz for 21 yards and a first down at the Bishop 18, but the Ohio Wesleyan defense stiffened and Andrew Milligan came on to kick a 31-yard field goal for a 10-0 Wooster lead with 6:01 left in the half.

The Fighting Scots increased the lead to 17-0 on their first possession of the second half, going 67 yards in 9 plays, capped by Sheppard's 17-yard run around left end.

On the Bishops' next possession, they faced a fourth-and-inches situation from their own 32-yard line. Looking to make something happen and generate some momentum, Ohio Wesleyan went for the first down, but Hymes' pass to sophomore halfback Joey Riley (Grove City) fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs.

Wooster took advantage of the good field position, covering the 32 yards in 3 plays. Schafer found Gertz on a slant pattern for 27 yards on first down, then Sheppard covered the final 5 yards in 2 carries, going over from 2 yards out for a 24-0 Wooster lead with 8:06 left in the third quarter.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened again later in the period, driving to a first and goal at the Wooster 10-yard line. Hymes picked up 2 yards on first down, but a false start penalty moved the ball back to the 13, and Hymes' pass into the end zone was tipped, with Wooster's Greg Schermbeck running down the carom for an interception and ending the Bishop threat.

Wooster's next possession ate more than 10 minutes off the clock, with the Fighting Scots marching to a first down at the Ohio Wesleyan 4-yard line before a holding penalty and a personal foul moved the Scots back to a first-and-goal from the 29-yard line. Eventually, Milligan came on for a 29-yard field goal try, but his kick was wide left.

Rice led the Bishops with 51 yards on 12 carries and caught a team-high 4 passes for 39 yards. Hymes completed 12 of 18 passes for 101 yards, with 3 of those passes going to Dennis for 32 yards.

Sheppard led all rushers with 75 yards on 19 carries. Schafer completed 14 of 21 passes for 215 yards and a score. Peltz caught 5 passes for 68 yards to lead the Fighting Scots.

Defensive standouts for Ohio Wesleyan included freshman defensive back Josh Lustig (Northbrook, Ill./Cushing Academy), who led the Bishops with 7 tackles; senior defensive end Patrick Trenor (Urbana), whose 4 stops included 2 sacks and 3 1/2 for loss; Case, whose 3 tackles included a sack and 2 for loss and forced a fumble; junior linebacker Bo Mayer (Hilliard/Davidson), who had 4 tackles, including 1 for loss, and a pass breakup; junior end Cory Fuller (Prospect/Marion Elgin), who had 4 tackles, including 1 for loss; and senior defensive back Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto), who made 4 stops
, including 1 for loss.
