[ Play of the Game ]Ohio Wesleyan 35, Denison 10

Oct. 14, 2006

Sophomore fullback Kyle Adams (North Canton/Hoover) ran for a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to give Ohio Wesleyan a 21-3 lead and the Bishops pulled away with second-half scores by sophomore halfback Joey Riley (Grove City) and senior halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Denison on Saturday in Granville.

The win was the 122nd at Ohio Wesleyan for head coach Mike Hollway, the most by any Ohio Wesleyan football coach. Hollway had been tied with Hall of Famer George Gauthier, who coached football at Ohio Wesleyan from 1921-46.

The game also was the 100th in the series between Ohio Wesleyan and Denison. Ohio Wesleyan holds a 62-31 lead in the series, with 7 games ending in a tie.

Denison took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Steve Flatley, moving 33 yards in 7 plays after the Big Red recovered a Bishop fumble on the Ohio Wesleyan 41.

The Bishops responded with a scoring drive to take the lead for good. Adams showed signs of things to come by picking up 6 yards for a first down at the Denison 46, then sophomore halfback Zach Rojek (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) gained another first down, getting 3 yards on third-and-2 from the Denison 38. Two plays later, junior quarterback Steve Hymes (Barberton/Massillon Washington) found sophomore tight end Terrance Raeford (Brookline, Mass./Chesire Academy) on a 35-yard scoring play, and the conversion by sophomore Chris Kras (Aurora) gave the Bishops a 7-3 lead.

Senior defensive back Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) gave the Bishops excellent field position by picking off a Brian Herbe pass at midfield and returning it to the Big Red 29-yard line, and Ohio Wesleyan took advantage by covering the 29 yards in 6 running plays, with Adams going over from 2 yards out on the first play of the second quarter.

Denison threatened to take the lead, driving to a first down at the Ohio Wesleyan 12-yard line, but on third-and-8 from the Bishop 10, senior defensive end Owen Case (Marion/River Valley) sacked Herbe for a 13-yard loss and forced a fumble, and sophomore linebacker Tommy Saunders (Gallipolis/Gallia Academy) recovered Herbe's fumble and returned it to the Ohio Wesleyan 37.

Rice ripped off a gain of 21 yards to put the ball into Denison territory, and Hymes then connected with junior split end Zach Dennis (Jefferson) for 44 yards and a first down at the Denison 6. Two plays later, Adams bulled over from 1 yard away and the Bishops had a 21-3 advantage with 9:11 left in the first half.

The Big Red closed to within 21-10 on Herbe's 27-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Laidlaw with 2:28 left in the half, and Denison got another chance when Joe Ulrey intercepted a Hymes pass at the Bishop 30-yard line.

After a first-down completion moved Denison to the Ohio Wesleyan 14, however, junior linebacker Chad Ellis (Dublin/Scioto) ended the threat by picking off a Herbe pass at the Bishop 10-yard line, and Ohio Wesleyan ran out the clock with the 21-10 lead intact.

Riley increased the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 28-10 with a 32-yard scoring run late in the third quarter, capping a drive of 80 yards in 8 plays. Riley had picked up a first down with a 10-yard gain earlier in the possession, and Rice got the ball into Denison territory with a 24-yard run.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Hymes and Raeford connected on another 35-yard play, this one moving the ball to the Denison 26-yard line. After Riley ran for 9 yards, Rice was brought down just short of the goal line for a first-and-goal at the Denison 1. After a penalty moved the ball back to the Big Red 6, freshman fullback Kyle Green (Batesville, Ind.) got the ball back to the 1 and Rice took it over on fourth down, with Kras' PAT accounting for the 35-10 final.

Rice led the Bishops with 88 yards on 15 carries, while Riley finished with 68 yards on 6 rushes. Hymes completed 5 of 9 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, with 3 of those passes going to Raeford for 85 yards.

Jon Berg led Denison with 79 yards on 19 carries. Herbe completed 8 of 21 passes for 119 yards and a score. Peter Jarowey caught 3 passes for 52 yards to lead the Big Red.

Defensive standouts for Ohio Wesleyan included Ellis, who made a team-high 9 tackles to go along with his interception; Saunders, who had 6 stops and recovered a fumble; junior linebacker Bo Mayer (Hilliard/Davidson), who made 6 tackles; Case, whose 5 stops included a sack and 2 for loss; freshman linebacker Eli Pierce (Columbus/Dublin Scioto), whose 4 stops included 1 for loss; sophomore tackle Julian Strother (Warren/Kennedy), who had a tackle for loss among his 4 stops; and Sherman, who contributed 4 tackles along with an interception and a pass breakup
