Allegheny
30, Ohio Wesleyan 13
Oct. 28, 2006
Allegheny
scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns and pulled away in the fourth
quarter in defeating Ohio Wesleyan in North Coast Athletic Conference
action on Saturday night in Meadville, Pa.
The Gators took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards in 7 plays, with
Mario Tarquinio going over from 10 yards out for the score. Tarquinio
ran for 3 first downs during the drive, reeling off gains of 12, 12 and
19 yards.
On Allegheny's next possession, junior linebacker Chad Ellis (Dublin/Scioto)
hit Tarquinio and forced a fumble, which junior linebacker Bo Mayer (Hilliard/Davidson)
pounced upon at the Gator 36-yard line.
A personal foul moved the ball back to the Bishop 49-yard line, but Ohio
Wesleyan marched the 51 yards in 12 plays. Senior halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto)
broke loose for 22 yards on first down, and Ohio Wesleyan converted a
pair of fourth-down situations during the drive. The first came on fourth-and-6
from the Gator 25 and saw junior quarterback Steve Hymes (Barberton/Massillon
Washington) find junior split end Zach Dennis (Jefferson) for 7 yards
to move the chains. The second was a fourth-and-1 call from the Allegheny
9, with Rice picking up 4 yards for a first-and-goal. Two plays later,
Rice went over from 3 yards out to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 7-6.
Sophomore Chris Kras (Aurora) had his point after kick blocked, but Allegheny
was offside on the kick. With the ball moved just outside the 1-yard line,
Ohio Wesleyan elected to go for 2 points, but Rice was tripped up short
of the Gator goal line and the score remained 7-6.
Allegheny answered with a 69-yard, 6-play drive that culminated in Matt
Cellini's 16-yard touchdown run with 12:22 left in the first half, and
after a Bishop punt, the Gators stretched the lead to 20-6 on Jimmy Savage's
13-yard scoring pass to Dallas Robinson with 6:23 left in the half.
The Gators threatened once more after taking over on the Ohio Wesleyan
23-yard line on a bad snap on a Bishop punt, but sophomore tackle Julian
Strother (Warren/Kennedy) finished off that threat by sacking Savage for
a 9-yard loss on fourth down from the Ohio Wesleyan 16.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 20-13 with a 95-yard march in the third
quarter. Key plays included a 17-yard hookup from Hymes to Rice that got
the Bishops into Allegheny territory, a Hymes rush for 13 yards and a
first down at the Gator 26, a connection for 5 yards from Hymes to Dennis
on fourth-and-3 at the Allegheny 19, and the touchdown play itself, a
13-yard strike from Hymes to sophomore tight end Corey Turner (Cleveland/Marshall)
on fourth-and-9.
The Bishops got the ball back with a chance to tie the game, but on the
second play of the fourth quarter, Hymes' pass was picked off by Micheal
Folk at the Ohio
Wesleyan 45-yard line.
Allegheny took advantage of the opportunity by getting a 47-yard field
goal from Josh Whiteside, and the Gators later tacked on a score when
Savage found Shane Sullivan on a 15-yard scoring toss for the 30-13 final.
Rice
led the Bishops with 77 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and caught
2 passes for 15 yards. Hymes completed 6 of 13 passes for 42 yards and
a score. Dennis led the Bishops with 3 receptions for 14 yards.
Tarquinio led all rushers with 160 yards on 27 carries. Savage completed
9 of 18 passes for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns, with Sullivan catching
3 passes for 40 yards and a score.
Defensive standouts for Ohio Wesleyan included sophomore linebacker Tommy
Saunders (Gallipolis/Gallia Academy), who led the Bishops with 12 tackles,
including 1 for loss; Ellis, who had 11 stops; and freshman safety Rylan
Mitter-Burke (Marlborough, Mass.), who recorded 8 tackles.
