Ohio
Wesleyan 58, Hiram 0
Nov. 4, 2006
Senior
halfback Nick Rice (Dublin/Scioto) ran for 2 touchdowns and junior quarterback
Steve Hymes (Barberton/Massillon Washington) threw for 2 scores and ran
for another as the Ohio Wesleyan offense turned 5 Hiram first-half turnovers
into scores and went on to defeat the Terriers in North Coast Athletic
Conference action on Saturday at Selby Field.
The Bishops took the opening kickoff and marched 69 yards in 6 plays.
Hymes moved the Bishops into scoring position with a 42-yard strike down
the left sideline to junior split end Zach Dennis (Jefferson). Hymes ran
for 11 yards on the next play and Rice moved the ball 9 yards to the Terrier
2-yard line on the following play. On third-and-goal from the Hiram 3,
Rice went around left end for the touchdown.
Senior defensive back Kyle Sherman (Plain City/Dublin Scioto) made a diving
interception of a Matt Pratt pass to end Hiram's first possession, and
the Bishops moved 73 yards in 7 plays to take a 14-0 lead. Hymes ran for
15 yards on the first play of the drive, then hit Rice for 32 yards along
the sideline. Another Hymes carry, this time for 13 yards, gave the Bishops
a first-and-goal, and on third down from the 8, Hymes found Dennis for
the score.
Hiram's Jon Agnew fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Ohio Wesleyan recovered
at the Terrier 25-yard line. Hymes picked up a first down with an 11-yard
carry, then hit sophomore tight end Terrance Raeford (Brookline, Mass./Chesire
Academy) on a 5-yard scoring pass to give the Bishops a 21-0 lead with
6:40 left in the first quarter.
The Terriers picked up a couple first downs and moved the ball into Ohio
Wesleyan territory on their next possession, but the drive short-circuited
when Agnew dropped the ball in the backfield and senior end Owen Case
(Marion/River Valley) recovered for the Bishops at the Hiram 47.
Again it was Rice and Hymes providing substantial chunks of yardage, with
Rice picking up 11 yards and a first down, then Hymes connecting with
Raeford for 30 yards and a first down at the Hiram 7 on the final play
of the first quarter. Three plays later, Rice went over from 1 yard out
for the touchdown.
Senior cornerback Tom Thome (Macedonia/Nordonia) got the ball back for
Ohio Wesleyan with an interception just inside the sideline, giving the
Bishops possession at their own 45-yard line.
Hymes picked up one first down with a 14-yard gain and sophomore halfback
Nathan Osborn (Edgerton) got 2 more, getting 5 yards on third-and-1 from
the Hiram 30, then rushing for 13 yards on second-and-10 from the 25,
but the drive stalled after that and senior Jason Whitcomb (Wauseon) came
on for a 27-yard field goal that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 31-0 lead with 7:24
left in the first half.
After a Hiram 3-and-out, Hymes capped a 40-yard, 3-play drive with a 27-yard
run around left end for a touchdown that increased the Bishop lead to
38-0.
The Terrier offense fought back, with Agnew exploding for 29 yards on
the first play from scrimmage, giving Hiram a first down on the Ohio Wesleyan
33. Agnew picked up 5 more yards on first down, but on second down, DeAndre
Adkins' sideline pass was picked off by Thome, who sailed 75 yards down
the sideline for a touchdown and a 45-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Ohio Wesleyan scored on its first possession of the second half, with
Rice and sophomore halfback Joey Riley (Grove City) rushing for all 54
yards during an 8-play march that concluded with Rice's 25-yard touchdown
run with 8:06 left in the third quarter.
Sophomore halfback Zach Rojek (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) wrapped
up the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with a 1-yard run in the closing minutes.
The score was set up by an interception return to the 5-yard line by freshman
defensive back Duane Ramseur (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins).
Hymes led the Bishops with 92 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries and completed
7 of 12 passes for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns. Rice finished with 78 yards
and 3 touchdowns on 12 carries. Dennis, Rice and Raeford each caught 2
passes for Ohio Wesleyan.
Agnew led the Terriers with 61 yards on 16 carries. Pratt completed 1
of 7 passes for 10 yards, while Adkins completed 1 of 3 passes for 5 yards..
Defensive standouts for Ohio Wesleyan included sophomore defensive back
Matt Weisman (Solon/Gilmour Academy), who had a team-high 7 tackles and
an interception; Sherman, who made 4 stops and picked off a pass; Case,
whose 3 tackles included 1 1/2 for loss and a fumble recovery; freshman
tackle Frank Willis (Hanford, Calif./West), who recorded the Bishops'
only sack of the day; and Thome, who had 1 tackle and 2 interceptions.
