Ohio
Wesleyan 4, Oberlin 3
Oct. 10, 2006
Sophomore
midfielder Shannon McHenry (Powell/Rancho Buena Vista (Calif.)) scored
the game-winning goal less than a minute into the first overtime period
as Ohio Wesleyan knocked off defending North Coast Athletic Conference
champion Oberlin on Tuesday at Selby Field.
Freshman midfielder Kat Mannix (Philadelphia, Pa./Berkshire (Mass.) School)
moved the ball up the left side and centered it to McHenry, whose shot
got past Oberlin keeper Lauren Malinowski with 14:09 left in the extra
session.
Ohio Wesleyan had built a 3-0 lead early in the second half.
The Bishops broke the scoreless deadlock during the final minute of the
first half, when sophomore defender Helen Herr (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster
Christian) took a shot from the right side of the circle. The ball glanced
off an Oberlin defender's stick and caromed to junior defender Diana Boryczewski
(Kensington,
Conn./Kingswood Oxford), who scored with :25 left in the period.
The Bishops increased their lead to 2-0 on a breakaway goal by junior
midfielder Maggie Donovan (Westport, Conn./Staples) in the 41st minute.
Senior attacker Julie Higgins (Gladstone, N.J./Voorhees) hiked the Ohio
Wesleyan lead to 3-0 when she took a pass from sophomore midfielder Tara
Porter (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire (Mass.) School) and finished the chance
in the 48th minute.
Oberlin got on the scoreboard just over a minute later, when Christine
Politis sent the ball into the circle and Catherine Meredith redirected
it just inside the left post with 21:33 left in regulation time.
The Yeowomen closed to within 3-2 on a virtually identical play. Claire
Cheney fielded an Oberlin penalty corner and sent the ball toward the
left post, where Ashley Allen tipped it in with 14:24 on the clock.
The Politis-to-Meredith combination clicked again for Oberlin, with Politis
sending the ball from the left side across the goal mouth to Meredith,
who knocked it inside the right post to complete the Yeowomen comeback
and even the game at 3-3 with 9:27 to play in regulation time.
Ohio Wesleyan had a chance to take the lead in the 64th minute when senior
attacker Abbey Kelley (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy) set sail on a breakaway.
Malinowski came out of her cage and broke up the play, with Ohio Wesleyan
getting a corner. The Bishops got 3 shots off the ensuing corner, but
the Oberlin defense held on, with Malinowski making a save to preserve
the tie.
Oberlin
outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 37-29.
Junior Katie Jones (Pine Plains, N.Y./Stissing Mountain) had 11 saves
in the Ohio Wesleyan cage and Malinowski finished with 11 saves for the
Yeowomen.
