1st of 9 at NCAC championship

[ Kyle Martin ]Sophomore Kyle Martin (Dublin/Wellington) and sophomore Jeff Nieman (Maineville/Cincinnati Moeller) led Ohio Wesleyan to a win at the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament, hosted by the College of Wooster on Saturday and Sunday at The Legends of Massillon in Massillon, Ohio.

Ohio Wesleyan won the tournament with an 897. Allegheny finished in second place at 919, followed by Denison (952), Wooster and Wittenberg (965), Wabash (973), Hiram (992), Oberlin (1078) and Kenyon (1102).

The tournament win clinches the NCAC championship for Ohio Wesleyan. Beginning this year, the conference championship was determined by the teams' cumulative scores in the 4 conference events during the academic year. Ohio Wesleyan had a total of 2703 shots, with Allegheny finishing second at 2763. Wittenberg finished third with 2856, followed by Wooster (2869), Denison (2881), Wabash (2961), Hiram (3022) and Kenyon (3206). Oberlin, which did not compete in the 2 fall tournaments, was not eligible for the conference championship.

Ohio Wesleyan also receives the NCAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III championship tournament.

Martin won medalist honors with a 219, with Nieman finishing in second place at 221. Freshman Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South)
finished in fourth place with a 224, sophomore Andy Schillig (Pataskala/Licking Heights) tied for eighth place at 233, senior Doug McCullough (Sleepy Hollow, Ill./St. Edward) finished in 17th place with a 240.

Martin, Nieman and Chiero were first-team All-NCAC selections. The Bishop players ranked 1-2-3 in the NCAC in the 4 conference events, with Martin finishing with a total of 669, Nieman with 671 and Chiero with 693.

Schillig was an honorable mention All-NCAC pick, based on his finish in this weekend's NCAC tournament.

Martin received the Nye Award as conference medalist. McCullough received the Gordin Award as the NCAC Player of the Year.

Ohio Wesleyan head coach Jon Whithaus was named NCAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time.
