T10th of 12 at Gordin Collegiate Classic

Sophomores Kyle Martin (Dublin/Wellington) led the Bishops at the Gordin Collegiate Classic, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday and Monday at The Members Course at The Grande Dunes Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Emory won the tournament with a 581. Rhodes finished second with a 585, and 2-time defending champion Guilford was third at 589. Methodist finished fourth with a 590, followed by Skidmore (591), LaVerne (599), Texas Lutheran (602), Nebraska Wesleyan (603), Oglethorpe (605), Ohio Wesleyan and Allegheny (606) and Otterbein (612).

Martin tied for 11th place among individuals with a 5-over-par 147. Sophomore Jeff Nieman (Maineville/Cincinnati Moeller) tied for 30th place at 151, freshman Jesse Chiero (Westerville/South) tied for 36th place with a 153, sophomore Adam Claytor (Columbus/Wellington) tied for 44th place at 155, and sophomore Andy Schillig (Pataskala/Licking Heights) finished 58th with a 166.

The Gordin Classic annually matches 12 of the best NCAA Division III teams in one of the nation's most prestigious small-college tournaments. The tournament is named after longtime Ohio Wesleyan coach Dick Gordin. Gordin, who served as the Bishops' golf coach from 1955-93, guided 22 of his last 25 teams to the NCAA Division III or College Division tournaments, bringing home 6 top-5 finishes in his last 8 years, including runner-up finishes in 1990 and 1993 and thirds in 1989 and 1991. Ohio Wesleyan won a total of 12 league titles in 5 different decades under Gordin. His teams won 7 Ohio Athletic Conference championships and 5 North Coast Athletic Conference crowns. Gordin was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1993.
