Ohio Wesleyan 72, Denison 50

Jan. 3, 2007

Senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored 10 of his team-high 11 points during the second half as Ohio Wesleyan broke open a close game and went on to defeat Denison in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night in Granville.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened to run away with the game early, breaking a 7-7 tie with a 13-0 run. Senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) got things going with a 3-pointer, and trifectas by senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) and sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) followed. A Holliday lay-in and a jumper by junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) gave the Bishops a 20-7 lead with 13:10 left in the first half.

Denison answered with a 16-3 run of its own to tie the game at 23-23 with 4:34 left in the period. Dan Hodgkinson converted 3-point plays to begin and end the Big Red run, and Chris Eberst hit a pair of 3-pointers during the spree.

Junior wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) drilled a 3-pointer with 1:36 left in the half, breaking a 28-28 tie and putting the Bishops ahead to stay. Denison closed to within 31-30 at halftime on Pat Sullivan's jumper at the buzzer, and the Big Red were still within 33-32 after the teams traded buckets to open the second half.

Freshman guard Robby Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman) hit a 3-pointer and Chojnacki hit 3 straight lay-ins to help the Bishops stretch the lead, which reached double figures at 46-36 on Holliday's fast break lay-in with 13:22 left in the game.

The Big Red got within 46-37 on a Dan Izzo free throw, but Jean followed with a 3-point play and Gardiner hit a jumper after a Big Red turnover, giving the Bishops a 51-37 lead with 11:11 remaining, and the lead would remain in double digits for the remainder of the game.

Chojnacki and junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) shared the team lead with 11 points apiece, and Holliday added 10 points. Rudegeair led the Bishops with 8 rebounds and Chojnacki had a team-high 5 assists.

Hodgkinson led Denison with 17 points and Shea McMahon scored 10 points for the Big Red. Izzo grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds and Sullivan led Denison with 4 assists.
