Ohio Wesleyan 53, Kenyon 47

Jan. 6, 2007

Junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) and senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored to break a 45-45 tie and help Ohio Wesleyan to a hard-fought North Coast Athletic Conference win over Kenyon on Saturday afternoon at Branch Rickey Arena.

Kenyon tied the game at 45 on David Jolson's 3-pointer with 6:01 left in regulation time, but on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, Chojnacki found Rudegeair for a lay-in that gave the Bishops the lead for good.

After a Kenyon turnover, Chojnacki hit a lay-in for a 49-45 Bishop lead with 5:11 to play.

The Bishops stretched the lead to 51-45 on free throws by Rudegeair and senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina), the latter with 3:30 left in regulation time.

Kenyon closed to within 51-47 on Bryan Yelvington's jumper with 1:31 to play, but Ohio Wesleyan got the basket back when Rudegeair cleared a defensive rebound and hit senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) for a lay-in and the 53-47 final.

Defense was the order of the day, as neither team scored until Rudegeair's lay-in nearly 3 minutes into the game. The Bishops built a 23-17 lead on a jumper by junior post Ryan Rozak (Fairview Park/Fairview), but Kenyon scored the next 6 points, tying the game on Jolson's 3-pointer with 1:04 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan built a pair of 6-point leads early in the second half, but Kenyon took the lead at 40-39 on Dave Knapke's 3-pointer and Josh Klinger's lay-in.

The Lords still led, 42-41, after Chojnacki and Kenyon's Korey Haddox traded buckets, but Ohio Wesleyan got baskets from freshman guard Robby Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman) and Chojnacki for a 45-42 lead, setting up the final 6 minutes of regulation.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 21 points. His 21 points moved his career total to 1257, moving him into 12th place on the all-time Ohio Wesleyan scoring list ahead of Tom Carnes, who scored 1250 points from 1964-68. Rudegeair added 10 points, Shirer grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds and Gardiner and Shirer shared the team lead with 2 assists apiece.

Haddox and Knapke led the Lords with 10 points apiece. Haddox had a game-high 8 boards and Josh Klinger led Kenyon with 4 assists.
