Earlham
68, Ohio Wesleyan 65
Jan.
13, 2007
Junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) scored to bring
Ohio Wesleyan within a point with :09 to play, but senior wing Matt Shirer
(Medina) misfired on a game-tying 3-point shot just before the buzzer
and Earlham held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the
Bishops on Saturday at Richmond, Ind.
The Quakers led, 64-60, on a lay-in by Joe Rihm with 3:09 left in regulation
time.
Rudegeair then canned a jumper on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession and
was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw that would have brought
the Bishops within 64-63 with 2:53 to go. With the score still 64-62,
Rudegeair was fouled with 2:02 to play and hit the second of 2 free throws
to make it 64-63.
After each team committed a turnover and missed a 3-pointer, Markous Jewett
was fouled and hit 2 free throws to give Earlham a 66-63 lead with :26
to play, but Rudegeair answered with a lay-in that brought Ohio Wesleyan
back within 66-65 with :09 to go.
Forced to foul to get the ball back, the Bishops sent Jewett back to the
line with :07 to go, and Jewett hit both free throws to increase the Quaker
lead to 68-65.
Shirer got a look at a game-tying 3-pointer, but his shot with :01 to
play was off the mark.
Ohio Wesleyan opened up a 12-6 lead just over 5 minutes into the game,
getting all 12 markers on 3-pointers by senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina).
Chojnacki would bury a fifth consecutive shot from long range, but Earlham
went on a 10-3 run that included a 3-pointer by Tristian Gregory and 3
points from Nick Welsh, and the Quakers took a 16-15 lead on Jewett's
lay-in with 10:53 left in the first half.
With a 25-23 lead, Earlham went on a 9-2 run, with LaRon Henry hitting
a 3-pointer and Welsh, Jewett and Neil Collins adding baskets for a 34-25
lead with 2:37 to play in the first half.
Chojnacki brought the Bishops within 34-28 with his sixth 3-pointer of
the game, and neither team would score during the final 2 minutes of the
half.
Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with a 10-2 run, tying the game at
36-36 on a jumper by freshman guard Robby Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman) and
taking a 38-36 lead on Rudegeair's jumper.
Earlham re-took the lead on Henry's 3-pointer, and the Quakers would take
a 50-41 lead on another Henry 3-pointer with 11:18 left in regulation
time.
The Bishops answered with a 15-5 run that included a pair of Rudegeair
lay-ins, a lay-in by senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson)
and a 3-point play by sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert). Gardiner
capped the run with a pair of free throws that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 56-55
lead with 5:42 to play.
Jewett followed with a jumper that put Earlham ahead to stay, and Gregory's
lay-in gave the Quakers a 59-56 lead with 4:59 remaining, setting up the
final few minutes.
Chojnacki led the Bishops with 24 points, while Rudegeair added 15 points
and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Gardiner, Shirer and junior guard
Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) shared the team lead
with 2 assists apiece.
Jewett led Earlham with 22 points and 6 rebounds, while Henry finished
with 19 points. Neil Collins had 6 assists and shared the Quaker lead
with 6 assists.
