Ohio
Wesleyan 70, Wittenberg 48
Jan.
17, 2007
Senior
wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) scored all of his game-high
16 points during the second half as Ohio Wesleyan defused a Wittenberg
rally and pulled away for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday
night at Branch Rickey Arena.
The victory was the 100th win at Ohio Wesleyan for Battling Bishop head
coach Mike DeWitt.
Wednesday's contest opened as a rugged defensive battle. Jack Hemenway
scored on Wittenberg's first possession for a 2-0 lead, but neither team
would score until Pat Denbow hit a 3-pointer for the Tigers with 16:37
left in the half.
The Bishops tied the game less than a minute later, getting a bucket from
junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) and a 3-pointer
from junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles).
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead for good on a 3-point play by sophomore wing
Kyle Holliday (Van Wert), and when senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) followed
with a basket, junior post Ryan Rozak (Fairview Park/Fairview) hit a key
jumper and Holliday added a 3-pointer, the Bishops had a 17-10 lead at
the midway point of the half.
Wittenberg closed to within 17-12 on a bucket by Dane Borchers, but the
Bishops responded with a 9-0 run that included a jumper and a 3-pointer
from Shirer and hoops by senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and Jean,
the latter giving Ohio Wesleyan a 26-12 lead with 5:22 left in the period.
The Tigers would answer with an 8-0 run to finish the half, with Gregg
Hill sinking a lay-in and Hemenway, Mark Huelsman and Borchers each hitting
a pair of free throws.
Chojnacki opened the second half with a jumper and junior post Dustin
Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) scored on a fast break after a Tiger miss,
extending the Bishop lead to double figures at 30-20 less than a minute
into the period.
Hill scored to bring the Tigers within 30-22, but the Bishops put together
an 11-2 run, with Uritus burying a pair of 3-pointers, Jean hitting a
jumper from the lane and Rudegeair finishing off the run with a 3-pointer
that made it a 41-24 game with 16:01 to play. The Bishops stretched the
lead to 48-25 on a Teeters 3-pointer at the 14:18 mark.
Wittenberg got lay-ins from Brandan Barabino, Hill, Borchers and David
Nowicki to close within 52-38 with 7:37 remaining, but Uritus converted
a 3-point play and followed with a 3-pointer to extend the lead back to
20 points with 6:35 to play, and after that, the Tigers would not come
closer than 16 points.
Uritus led the Bishops with 16 points, while Jean, Rudegeair and Holliday
added 10 points apiece. Jean grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds and Teeters
and Uritus shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.
Borchers led Wittenberg with 13 points and 8 rebounds.
