Wooster 61, Ohio Wesleyan 54

Jan. 20, 2007

Junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at 31-31 early in the second half, but Wooster answered with a 9-2 run to take the lead for good and went on to post a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Bishops on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 31-25, at the intermission, but the Bishops opened the second period with a 6-0 spurt. Junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) scored on a putback, junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) hit a free throw and Teeters sank a 3-pointer that evened the game at 31-31 with 17:59 left in regulation time.

On Wooster's next possession, Brandon Johnson was fouled and sank both free throws, and on the Bishops' next possession, James Cooper stole the ball and fed Tom Port for a fast-break dunk. Evan Will followed with a lay-in for a 37-31 Fighting Scot lead.

Rudgeair hit a pair of free throws with 16:41 to play, bringing the Bishops within 37-33, but Cooper hit a 3-pointer with 15:46 to go, stretching the Wooster lead to 40-33.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 45-43 on a 3-pointer by senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) with 10:30 left in regulation time, and the Bishops were still within 50-47 on Rudegeair's lay-in with 7:07 to play, but Ohio Wesleyan would score just one basket during the next 4:10.

Senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) ended the Bishop drought with a lay-in that brought Ohio Wesleyan within 56-51 with 2:57 to go, but the 5-point margin was as close as the Bishops would get.

Wooster had taken an early 8-2 lead on lay-ins by Johnson, Port and Marty Bidwell and a pair of Cooper free throws.

Ohio Wesleyan fought back to within 10-7 on Jean's putback with 11:02 left, but Wooster got back-to-back 3-pointers from Port to kick off a 9-2 run that opened up a 10-point Scot lead with 9:36 to go.

The Fighting Scots led, 29-17, with 3:39 to go when the Bishops fought back, getting a Shirer 3-pointer, a 3-point play from sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) and a Chojnacki lay-in to close within 31-25 at the break.

Chojnacki led the Bishops with 11 with 11 points and 3 assists. Rudegeair finished with a team-high 11 rebounds.
