Ohio Wesleyan 92, Hiram 86

Jan. 27, 2007

Senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) hit 3-pointers during a pair of key second-half bursts that helped Ohio Wesleyan hold off Hiram for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday in Hiram.

With the Bishops trailing, 65-62, with just under 8 minutes remaining in regulation time, senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) hit one of 2 free throws to make it a 2-point game, and Shirer followed with a pair of free throws to even the score at 65-65 with 7:26 to go, the game's 10th and final tie.

Junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) followed with a jumper at the 6:08 mark to put the Bishops ahead to stay, and after a Hiram miss, Shirer buried a 3-pointer for a 70-65 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 5:26 remaining.

The Terriers closed to within a single marker on buckets by Ian Pfouts and Michael McDevitt, but senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) answered with a hoop for Ohio Wesleyan and Shirer followed with a 3-pointer to stretch the Bishop lead to 75-69 with 3:42 remaining.

Hiram would close to within 4 points on a pair of occasions, but both times Ohio Wesleyan had a response, first with a slam by junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) on an offensive rebound and then with a pair of Uritus free throws with :07 left to account for the final margin after Hiram had rallied to within 90-86.

Helped by the early scoring of Mike Staley, the Terriers raced to an early 13-6 lead.

The Bishops bounced back by scoring the next 10 points, helped by a Chojnacki 3-pointer, tip-ins by Jean and sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) and a Jean jumper with 9:16 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan would lead by as many as 7 points in the half, taking a 28-21 lead on a 3-pointer by junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) with 4:58 left, but Hiram rallied to tie the game at 29-29 and took a 37-35 lead into the locker room courtesy of Chuck Willams' 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Terriers would not trail again until Jean's tip-in 5 minutes into the half, and the lead changed hands repeatedly during the next 7 minutes.

Uritus led the Bishops with 20 points, going 15-for-17 from the line, and dished out a team-high 4 assists. Chojnacki finished with 18 points, Shirer scored 17 points, Jean scored 14 points and led the Bishops with 12 rebounds, and Rudegair finished with 10 points.

Staley led Hiram with 23 points and 8 assists. McDevitt scored 21 points and led the Terriers with 8 rebounds, Williams had 14 points and Pfouts contributed 10 points.
