Wittenberg 71, Ohio Wesleyan 64

Feb. 7, 2007

Junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) hit a lay-in to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 67-64 with :56 left in regulation time, but Wittenberg hit 4 straight free throws to seal a North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Bishops on Wednesday in Springfield.

After Jean's lay-in, junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) swiped the ball from Wittenberg's David Nowicki, giving Ohio Wesleyan a chance to tie the game with :44 left. After a Bishop timeout, a jumper by senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) was off the mark and Wittenberg cleared the rebound.

The Bishops fouled Gregg Hill, who hit both charity tosses to make it a 69-64 margin :19 to play, and after Teeters misfired on a 3-pointer, Hill was fouled again and hit both free throws to account for the final margin.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 57-50 lead on Jean's lay-in with 7:26 left in regulation time, but Wittenberg scored the next 11 points to take the lead for good. Nowicki started the run with a 3-pointer, then Dane Borchers contributed a pair of free throws and a 3-point play to give the Tigers a 58-57 lead with 4:29 remaining. Brandon Barabino followed with a 3-pointer to stretch the Wittenberg lead to 61-57.

Uritus ended the Bishop drought with a free throw to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 61-58 with 3:42 left, but while the Bishops would narrow the margin to 3 points on 3 different occasions, they would not come closer than that during the remainder of the game.

Wittenberg broke an early 4-4 tie with a 9-2 run that included contributions from 4 different scorers. The Tigers still led, 18-11, when the Bishops got a 3-pointer from junior wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) and a Jean lay-in to creep within 18-16 at the midway point of the first half.

The Bishops took a 27-26 lead on a 3-pointer and a jumper by senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina), and stretched the margin to 32-28 on Teeters' 3-pointer with just over 2 minutes left in the half.

Barabino hit a jumper and a 3-pointer during a 7-0 Wittenberg run that gave the Tigers a 35-32 lead, but the Bishops evened the game on Shirer's 3-pointer with :44 left in the half and trailed, 36-35, at the intermission after Jack Hemenway hit the first of 2 free throws with :21 left.

The game was tied 4 times during the opening minutes of the second half before Ohio Wesleyan moved in front on Cafarella's 3-pointer with 13:13 left in regulation time. Cafarella added a pair of free throws, sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) sank a lay-in and Jean hit 3 straight shots as the Bishops gradually built their 57-50 lead with 7:26 to go.

Jean led the Bishops with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Shirer finished with 13 points and Teeters and Uritus shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.

Borchers paced Wittenberg with 19 points and 7 boards. Hill and Barabino scored 12 points apiece, Hemenway also finished with 7 rebounds and Pat Denbow had a team-high 4 assists
.
