Ohio Wesleyan 82, Earlham 70

Senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) scored 13 points and junior wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) added 12 points as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 48-29 halftime lead and went on to defeat Earlham in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops treated the Frank Shannon Day crowd to a shooting display, hitting 11 of their first 14 shots from the field. That stretch included 3 straight 3-pointers, with one by Shirer and 2 by Cafarella, that helped Ohio Wesleyan stretch a 14-10 lead to a 23-12 margin with 13:09 left in the half.

Earlham rallied to within 27-20 with the help of a 3-point play by Tristian Gregory and a 3-pointer by Neil Collins, but the Bishops answered with a 10-0 run which included 3-pointers by sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) and Cafarella and buckets from junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) and sophomore wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes).

Shirer's 3-pointer wrapped up the first-half scoring, giving Ohio Wesleyan a 48-29 lead at the intermission. Ohio Wesleyan shot 62.5 percent from the field during the period, hitting 20 of 32 shots. The Bishops were 8-for-16 from 3-point range during the half.

The Quakers closed to within 52-37 on Gregory's lay-in early in the second half, but Earlham would not come closer than that until Collins hit a pair of free throws to make it a 13-point game at 78-65 with 4:07 remaining, and it wasn't until LaRon Henry's lay-in with 1:12 left that Earlham came as close as a dozen points.

Junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) led the Bishops with 20 points, while Shirer finished with 16, Cafaralla scored 15 and Jean added 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) and senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) shared the team lead with 6 assists apiece.

Markous Jewett led the Quakers with 21 points. Gregory finished with 14 points and Nick Welsh scored 13 points. Collins grabbed a team-high 6 boards for Earlham.
