Ohio Wesleyan 96, Oberlin 59

Senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) and junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) scored 14 points apiece as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 57-32 halftime lead and went on to defeat Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Thursday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan took an early 12-3 lead with the help of 3-pointers by Shirer and junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles), and the Bishops torched the twines by hitting 11 of their first 14 shots on the way to a 27-15 lead less than 7 minutes into the game.

Oberlin closed to within 27-17 on a pair of free throws by Jerome Goings with 11:07 left in the half, but Ohio Wesleyan went on a 12-2 spurt, kicked off by a pair of jumpers from sophomore wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes), to pad the margin to 39-19 with 7:43 remaining in the period.

The Yeomen rallied to within 40-26 with 6:00 left in the half, but Ohio Wesleyan pulled away with a 12-1 run that included 6 points by Rudegeair, and Oberlin would not come closer than 21 points during the remainder of the contest.

Rudegeair led the Bishops with 20 points, going 9-for-12 from the field. Junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) finished with 15 points, hitting 7 of 9 shots, and a game-high 13 rebounds. Shirer added 14 points and Miller contributed 11 points. Senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) and freshman guard Robby Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman) shared the team lead with 4 assists apiece.

Mike Loll led Oberlin with 23 points and 7 rebounds, while Quinton Spencer finished with 10 points. Dylan Venable had 3 assists for the Yeomen.
