Wooster 95, Ohio Wesleyan 89

Feb. 17, 2007

Junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 87-87 with 4:55 left in regulation time, but Wooster went 8-for-9 from the free throw line the rest of the way to hold off the Bishops and take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday in Wooster.

The Bishops trailed, 74-68, after Wooster's James Cooper hit a 3-pointer with 12:30 left in the game, but Ohio Wesleyan chipped away at the deficit and took a 77-76 lead on a 3-pointer by junior wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North), then increased the margin to 79-76 on a bucket by junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs).

After the teams traded points twice, leaving the Bishops with an 84-81 lead with 6:55 left, the Fighting Scots took the lead with back-to-back jumpers by Brandon Johnson and a fast break lay-in by Cooper.

Teeters' 3-ball evened the game at 87-87, but Wooster's Tom Port hit a pair of free throws with 4:15 left to give the Scots the lead for good, then neither team scored until Cooper sank a pair of free throws to extend the Scot lead to 91-87 with 1:14 to go.

Port added 2 more free throws with :20 to play, allowing Wooster to withstand a jumper by senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) with :09 left, and Johnson added a pair of free throws in the final seconds to account for the final margin.

Ohio Wesleyan had led through a good portion of the first half, breaking a 13-13 tie with a 13-4 run that included 3-pointers by freshman guard Robby Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman), Cafarella and sophomore wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes) and buckets by junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) and sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert).

Wooster answered with a 9-2 run that included a pair of Port baskets and a 3-pointer by Devin Fulk, and the Scots then broke a 45-45 tie with 3-pointers by Port and Cooper before Holliday's 3-pointer brought Ohio Wesleyan within 51-48 at halftime.

Uritus hit a 3-pointer early in the second half and Holliday later hit a pair of free throws as the Bishops twice closed within a single point before finally taking the lead on Cafarella's 3-pointer.

Rudegeair led the Bishops with 20 points, while senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) scored 16, Miller finished with 14 and Cafarella added 10. Jean and Rudegeair shared the team lead with 5 rebounds apiece, and Shirer, Teeters and Miller each dished out 3 assists.

For Wooster, Cooper led the way with 23 points, while Port had 21 points and 14 rebounds. Johnson finished with 17 points and Evan Will scored 11 points.
