Wooster 86, Ohio Wesleyan 51

Feb. 23, 2007

[ Jesse Jean ]Junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) and senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) scored to bring the Bishops within 13-8 in the first half, but Wooster responded with a 14-0 run and went on to defeat Ohio Wesleyan in the championship game of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday at Wooster.

With the win, Wooster claims the NCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The wide margin of victory was quite uncharacteristic for the Bishops,
whose other 9 losses this season were by a total of 38 points, but it reflected the consistently outstanding play by Wooster on both ends of the court.

Jean and Wooster's James Cooper traded buckets to open the scoring before Cooper drilled a 3-pointer that put the Fighting Scots ahead to stay. Brandon Johnson added a lay-in and Tom Port hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to give Wooster a 12-4 lead with 16:05 left in the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 13-8 as Jean scored and Shirer hit a pair of free throws, but Port started the 14-0 Wooster run with a jumper and a 3-pointer and Cooper finished it off with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws.

Jean ended the Bishop drought with a lay-in, but Cooper hit a 3-pointer on Wooster's next possession to stretch the Fighting Scot lead to 30-10, and Wooster would lead by as many as 28 points during the first half before taking a 48-27 advantage into the locker room.

Wooster shot nearly 60 percent from the field during the first half, making 17 of 29 shots, including 7 of 14 from beyond the arc, and held a 19-10 edge on the boards. Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan made 8 of its 24 field goal attempts (33.3 percent).

Jean hit 3 straight baskets to open the second-half scoring and bring Ohio Wesleyan within 48-33 less than 90 seconds into the period, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.

Jean led the Bishops with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) finished with 10 points. Senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) dished out a team-high 4 assists.

For Wooster, Cooper finished with 26 points, while Port had 18 points and led the Fighting Scots with 8 rebounds and 6 assists, and Johnson ended up with 10 points.

Jean and Rudegeair represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team. They were joined by Dane Borchers of Wittenberg, Andrew Zimmer of Wabash, Port, and Cooper received tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
