Ohio Wesleyan 90, Washington & Jefferson 64

Senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) scored 4 points during a 7-0 run that closed out the first half and senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) buried a pair of 3-pointers during a 12-0 run early in the second half as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Washington & Jefferson in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Branch Rickey Arena.

Ohio Wesleyan had raced to an early 11-2 lead, getting a 3-point play from Shirer, a lay-in and a 3-pointer from Chojnacki and a 3-pointer by junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) in the first 3 minutes of play.

The Presidents rallied to within 21-20 on Jon Koch's jumper with 7:39 left in the first half, and were still within 30-28 on Koch's 3-pointer with 1:51 remaining.

Junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) hit the second of 2 free throws, then Shirer sank a pair of free throws and sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) hit 2 more charity tosses before Shirer sank a lay-in with :59 left in the half to stretch the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 37-28.

Washington & Jefferson trailed, 40-32, on Matt Vondran's lay-in 2 minutes into the second half when the Bishops went on the 12-0 tear.

Chojnacki's back-to-back 3-pointers started the run, and junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) and Rudegeair followed with 3-pointers that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 52-32 lead with 15:42 left in the game.

The Bishops put the game out of reach with a 15-0 spurt later in the half, with Jean hitting 3 buckets, sophomore wing Kyle Miller (Delaware/Hayes) adding a 3-pointer and a basket and Holliday sinking 2 baskets.

Chojnacki and Jean led the Bishops with 14 points apiece, with Chojnacki also grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Shirer added 12 points for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) dished out a team-high 4 assists.

Koch led all scorers with 23 points and Vordran added 15 points for W&J. Wahab Owolabi led the Presidents with 9 rebounds.
