Ohio Wesleyan 87, Illinois Wesleyan 74

Nov. 24, 2006

Junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) and junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) hit 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan broke an 8-8 tie and went on to defeat Illinois Wesleyan in the first round of DePauw University's Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge on Friday in Greencastle, Ind.

Ohio Wesleyan will play DePauw in the tournament championship game on Saturday. DePauw defeated Judson, 88-84, in Friday's other first-round game.

The Titans had tied the game at 8-8 on a lay-in by Andrew Gilmore when Rudegeair buried a 3-pointer to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay. After Illinois Wesleyan closed to within 11-10 on Zach Freeman's jumper, Teeters followed with a 3-pointer to stretch the Bishop lead to 14-10.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 15-12 lead on a 3-pointer by senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) and moved to an 8-point lead on back-to-back lay-ins by junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School).

Jean gave the Bishops their biggest lead of the first half with a lay-in that made it 39-30 with 2:28 to play, but Illinois Wesleyan closed to within 39-34 at the intermission on buckets by Darius Gant and Andrew Freeman.

The Bishops broke the game open early in the second half. After the Titans had closed to within 49-42 on Mike Harrigan's 3-pointer, Ohio Wesleyan got a 3-pointer from Rudegeair and 2 straight from senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) to extend the lead to 58-42 with 14:29 left in the game.

Illinois Wesleyan had one more rally left, getting 6 straight points from Gant to come within 70-63 with 5:04 remaining, but the Bishops ended the run with a 3-pointer by junior wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) and would lead by no fewer than 8 points during the remainder of the contest.

Rudegeair scored a team-high 22 points and shared the Bishop lead with 6 rebounds. Chojnacki finished with 13 points, Cafarella added 12 points and Jean scored 10 points on a perfect shooting night, going 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line. Teeters not only shared the team lead with 6 rebounds, but dished out a team-high 6 assists.

Gant led the Titans with 18 points, while Andrew and Zach Freeman each scored 16 points. Zach Freeman grabbed 9 rebounds to lead all players and shared the IWU lead with 3 assists, along with Gant and Gilmore
