DePauw 85, Ohio Wesleyan 79

Austin Brown and Ryan Werntz scored 5 points apiece as DePauw went on a 14-1 run in the second half and held off an Ohio Wesleyan comeback to win the championship game of the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge on Saturday in Greencastle, Ind.

Illinois Wesleyan defeated Judson, 92-50, in Saturday's consolation game.

Ohio Wesleyan had closed to within 55-51 on a jumper by senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) when the Tigers went on the 14-1 spurt.

Stephen Schott started off the DePauw run with a jumper, then Brown followed with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to give the Tigers a 62-51 lead with 12:48 left in regulation time.

Junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) hit the first of 2 free throws to make it a 10-point game, but the Tigers answered with a 3-pointer by
Werntz, a jumper from Tony James and a pair of Werntz free throws to stretch the margin to 69-52 with 10:50 left in the game.

Ohio Wesleyan came back with 5 straight points, getting a pair of free throws from junior wing Brian Cafarella (Westerville/North) and a 3-pointer by sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert) to close to within a dozen at 69-57 at the midway point of the second half.

The Bishops came within 75-68 on Shirer's 3-pointer with
6:10 remaining, and were as close as 5 points when junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) hit a lay-in with 1:08 remaining, bringing Ohio Wesleyan within 82-77.

James hit 1 of 2 free throws on DePauw's next possession, giving the Bishops a chance to make it a one-possession game, but Teeters' lay-in wouldn't fall, and the Tigers cleared the rebound and iced the outcome with a pair of Brown free throws with :12 to go.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 28-27 lead on a lay-in by Holliday with 8:39 left in the first half, but DePauw's Mike Moore followed with a 3-pointer that gave the Tigers the lead for good. DePauw would lead by as many as 7 points in the first half and took a 46-42 lead at the break.

Shirer opened the second half with a 3-pointer that brought the Bishops within 46-45, and the Bishops were within 48-47 on a hoop by senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) with 17:42 left in the game, but DePauw countered with a 3-point play and a basket by Brown to stretch the lead to 6 points and set the stage for the Tiger scoring run.

Holliday led the Bishops with 18 points, going 7-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line. Shirer and Chojnacki added 15 points apiece. Chojnacki led the Bishops with 7 rebounds and Chojnacki and Teeters had 2 assists apiece.

Brown led all players with 23 points, while Moore added 15 points and Werntz scored 14 points for DePauw. Schott grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds and Brian Oilar had 4 assists
.

Chojnacki represented the Bishops on the all-tournament team.
