Ohio Wesleyan 90, Hiram 49

Dec. 2, 2006

[ Dustin Rudegeair ]Junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) and senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) jump-started the Ohio Wesleyan offense and the Bishops went on to defeat Hiram in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Branch Rickey Arena.

The win raised the Bishops' record to 6-1, Ohio Wesleyan's best start since the 1962-63 squad reeled off 6 straight wins after a season-opening loss to Dayton.

Rudegeair got the Bishops on the scoreboard with a jumper 37 seconds into the game, and senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) followed up by stealing the ball from Hiram's Michael McDevitt and firing to Shirer for a fast break lay-in and a 4-0 Bishop lead just 13 seconds later.

Ohio Wesleyan stretched its lead to 8-2 on a Chojnacki lay-in and a pair of free throws by senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson).

Hiram was still within 6 points when Mike Staley drained a 3-pointer to make it a 17-11 game at the midway point of the first half, and were within 21-13 on Ian McGuire's jumper with 8:53 remaining, when a 3-pointer and a bucket by Rudegeair and fast break lay-ins by Uritus and Chojnacki stretched the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 30-15 with 5:24 to play.

The Terriers assembled one more rally, closing to within 30-21 on buckets by Staley and Brandon Pool and a pair of free throws by Chuck Williams, but Ohio Wesleyan put the game out of reach by closing the first half with a 14-2 spurt that included a 3-pointer by junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus DeSales), a pair of Chojnacki free throws, a fast break bucket by sophomore wing Kyle Holliday (Van Wert), a pair of free throws by freshman guard Robby Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman) and a lay-in and a 3-pointer from Holliday, the latter giving the Bishops a 44-23 halftime lead.

Ohio Wesleyan pulled away during the second half, with the Bishops leading by as many as 43 points.

Rudegeair led the Bishops with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Holliday finished with 14 points, junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) scored 12 points and Chojacki added 10 points and led the Bishops with 4 assists.

McDevitt led the Terriers with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Staley and Nick Epifano shared the Hiram lead with 2 assists apiece.
