Allegheny 73, Ohio Wesleyan 70

Dec. 9, 2006

Senior post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) hit a free throw to send the game into overtime, but Allegheny took the lead in the extra session and held off an Ohio Wesleyan rally to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday in Meadville, Pa.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the overtime with senior wing Ted Uritus (Columbus/Bishop Watterson) making one of 2 free throws for a 62-61 lead, but the Gators answered with a 3-point play by Ryan Hollihan and a basket by Jimmy Savage for a 66-62 edge with 3:22 remaining.

The Bishops still trailed, 70-66, when senior wing Matt Shirer (Medina) hit a lay-in to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 2 points with :29 to play.

Allegheny's Larry Sharp then was fouled with :24 to go. Sharp missed the first free throw, then hit the second to give the ball back to the Bishops in a one-possession game.

Junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) scored on a putback with :15 to play to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 71-70, and the Bishops fouled Sharp again, but this time the Gator forward hit both free throws to make it a 73-70 game with :14 to play.

Ohio Wesleyan had a couple of chances to tie the game, but 3-point attempts by Shirer and Chojnacki wouldn't fall.

The Bishops had held a 60-51 lead on Uritus' 3-pointer with 5:15 left in regulation time when Allegheny went on a 10-0 run to take the lead. Hollihan hit a free throw and a lay-in, Bill Babe had a bucket and 3 free throws and Ben Torsney capped the run with a jumper for a 61-60 Gator lead with 1:09 left in the game.

Fouled with :44 to play, Chojnacki hit the first free throw but missed the second, but the Bishop defense forced a turnover, with junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.) School) coming up with a steal with about :10 to play. After a Bishop time out, junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) misfired on a jumper and the game went into overtime.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 15-4 run that included three 3-pointers and 2 lay-ins by Chojnacki as well as a bucket from Rudegeair.

Allegheny closed to within 21-15 on a fast break lay-in by George Raftis with 9:32 left in the first half, but the Bishops reeled off 9 straight points on 2 Chojnacki lay-ins, a 3-pointer by Teeters and a Uritus bucket to stretch the lead to 15 points.

The Bishops held that 15-point margin at halftime, taking a 40-25 lead into the locker room, but Allegheny had whittled the deficit to 49-45 by the midway point of the second half.

Chojacki, who scored 21 points in the first half on 9-for-10 shooting, led all players with 22 points. Uritus finished with 13 points and Jean scored 10 points. Rudgeair, Shirer and Jean shared the team lead with 6 boards apiece, and freshman guard Robby Gardiner (Dublin/Coffman) led the Bishops with 5 assists.

Hollihan led the Gators with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Torsney added 14 points, Raftis scored 12 points and Babe finished with 11 points. Babe and Casey McCloskey shared the Allegheny lead with 4 assists
apiece.
