Wesleyan 86, Notre Dame 76
Dec.
29, 2006
Senior
post Ben Chojnacki (Medina) scored 6 points and junior wing Brian Cafarella
(Westerville/North) had 5 during a 16-2 second-half run that broke open
a win over Notre Dame in the consolation game of the Ashland University
Holiday Inn Express Tournament on Friday in Ashland.
Trailing, 12-9, with 12:39 left in the first half, the Falcons scored
10 straight points, highlighted by a pair of jumpers from Karim McFarlane.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with 7 straight points to tie the game at 19-19,
as junior post Dustin Rudegeair (Yellow Springs) hit a bucket and Chojacki
drilled
a 3-pointer and tied the game with a lay-in with 4:47 left in the first
half.
The Bishops took the lead for good in the last minute of the period, when
another Chojnacki 3-pointer broke a 26-26 tie.
Jerome Pierce's jumper at the buzzer brought Notre Dame within 29-28 at
the intermission, but junior guard Casey Teeters (Westerville/Columbus
St. Charles) and Chojnacki each nailed 3-pointers in the first minute
of the second half, and a Chojnacki lay-in shortly thereafter stretched
the Bishop lead to 37-30.
The Falcons closed to within 37-34, but the Bishops then went on their
16-2 run. Chojnacki started the spurt with consecutive lay-ins, senior
wing Matt Shirer (Medina) added a pair of free throws and Cafarella hit
a 3-pointer before consecutive lay-ins by Chojnacki and Cafarella, followed
by a 3-point play from junior post Jesse Jean (Alexandria, Va./Hyde (Conn.)
School) that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 53-36 lead with 12:38 left in regulation
time.
Notre Dame would not come closer than 9 points until the last 8 seconds
of the game, when Kyle Miller and Jeff Johnson hit 3-pointers to bring
the Falcons within 84-76.
Chojnacki led the Bishops with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Shirer finished
with 16 points and Rudegeair added 14 points. Teeters led the Bishops
with 5 assists.
