Ohio Wesleyan 20, Oberlin 8

Junior midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) scored 3 times during the first quarter to highlight a game-opening 6-0 run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Tuesday at Selby Field.

The Bishops got on the scoreboard with a goal from sophomore attacker Dave Castignola (Dublin/Scioto) less than 2 minutes into the game, then made it 2-0 when Castignola fed sophomore attacker Karl Zimmerman (Utica, Mich./Brother Rice) for a score midway through the period.

Eccles then got hot, scoring a pair of unassisted goals in a span of just over 2 minutes, and after freshman attacker Dan Richards (Dublin/Jerome) scored with :33 left in the quarter, Eccles struck again just 8 seconds later to give the Bishops a 6-0 lead after the first period.

Oberlin rallied to within 7-4 midway through the second period, putting together a 3-0 run with goals by Bryan Harfenist, Erik Strand, and Chris Sanders, and the Yeomen had a chance to come closer when Ohio Wesleyan lost the ball in front of the Oberlin bench.

The tide turned, however, when the Yeomen turned the ball over and freshman attacker Rob Young (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) scored in transition, kicking off a string of 3 straight Bishop goals to end the first half.

Ohio Wesleyan increased its lead to 12-4 with scores by Zimmerman and junior midfielder Harrison Iuliano (Mendham, N.J./Blair Academy) early in the third quarter, and the Bishops put the game out of reach with 3-0 runs in the third and fourth periods.

Eccles led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Zimmerman finished with 3 goals and freshman attacker Chris Ehlinger (Radnor, Pa.) added 2 goals and 2 assists. Castignola and Iuliano had 2 goals and an assist apiece, and freshman attacker James McCready (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) also scored twice.

Junior Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) had 3 saves in the Bishop goal during the first 49 minutes, and freshman Gavin Bennett (Lebanon, N.J./The Millbrook (N.Y.) School) stopped 1 Yeomen shot during the final 11 minutes.

Alex Jacobs had 2 goals and an assist for Oberlin, with Harfenist and Strand also scoring 2 goals apiece.

Drew Zambelli went the distance in the Oberlin goal and was credited with 19 saves.
