Junior
midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) set up Ohio Wesleyan's
first 2 goals and the Battling Bishops got first-quarter scores from 5
different players on the way to a non-conference win over Mount St. Joseph
on Saturday at Selby Field.
Eccles fed sophomore attacker Eric Turner (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) for
the Bishops' first goal, a shot from the right side that found the upper
left corner of the Lion goal with 10:58 left in the first period. Eccles
then set up sophomore attacker Karl Zimmerman (Utica, Mich./Brother Rice)
for a score midway through the quarter.
Freshman attacker Chris Ehlinger (Radnor, Pa.), senior midfielder B.C.
Green (Cazenovia, N.Y.)
and junior defenseman Andres McAlister (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga) added
goals to increase the Ohio Wesleyan to 5-0 after the first quarter.
The Bishops sealed the game by erupting for 3 goals during the first minute
of the second quarter. Turner fed sophomore
attacker Dave Castignola (Dublin/Scioto) for a score 14 seconds into the
quarter, then junior midfielder Steve Fowler (Wilton, Conn.) followed
with a score at the 14:15 mark and Turner scored off a feed from freshman
midfielder Peter Boucher (Harrison, N.Y./Salisbury (Conn.) School) just
8 seconds later for an 8-0 Bishop lead.
Sophomore midfielder Brian Deal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and
Eccles added goals as Ohio Wesleyan extended its lead to 10-0 midway through
the quarter.
Mount St. Joseph got on the scoreboard on a diving shot by Michael Basch
with 5:08 left in the first half, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the final 4
goals of the quarter, with Eccles and Castignola each contributing a goal
and an assist during that stretch.
Eccles led the Bishops with 2 goals and 4 assists. Freshman attacker James
McCready (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) scored a team-high 5 goals, Turner
finished with 3 goals and an assist, and Castignola and freshman attacker
Rob Young (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) contributed 2 goals and
an assist apiece.
Junior Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) had 8 saves during
the first half, while freshman Gavin Bennett (Lebanon, N.J./The Millbrook
(N.Y.) School) had 5 saves during the second half.
Basch led the Lions with 3 goals, and Neal Barnes had 2 assists.
Blake Herner was credited with 16 saves in the Lion goal.
