Ohio Wesleyan 10, Kenyon 7

March 31, 2007

Freshman midfielder Craig Aronoff (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) scored right off the opening face-off to kick off a 5-0 first-quarter run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over 18th-ranked Kenyon on Saturday at Selby Field.

Aronoff picked up the loose ball, circled upfield and found the back of the net to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead just :13 into the game.

Sophomore attacker Dave Castignola (Dublin/Scioto) and junior midfielder Steve Fowler (Wilton, Conn.) followed with scores to increase the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 3-0 midway through the first quarter, and freshman midfielder Chris Ehlinger (Radnor, Pa.) and junior midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) scored goals less than a minute apart, stretching the Bishop lead to 5-0 with 4:02 left in the quarter, and that margin held throughout the remainder of the period.

Luke Larson put Kenyon the scoreboard with a goal with 10:31 left in the second quarter, but the Bishops countered with a score by Castignola off a feed from freshman attacker Chaz Narwicz (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) just over a minute later, then finished off the first half with an unassisted goal by Eccles to take a 7-1 lead into the locker room.

Kenyon closed to within 7-3 during the third quarter, getting a man-up goal from Sean Wheeler and a score by Devin Catlin while holding Ohio Wesleyan scoreless during the period.

Ohio Wesleyan countered with a goal by Castignola in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, then got man-up scores by Castignola and freshman attacker Rob Young (Langhorne, Pa./Council Rock South) to stretch the lead to 10-3 with 5:08 left in regulation time.

The Lords put together a valiant comeback, with Larson scoring 3 times during the next 4-plus minutes. Larson's man-up goal with :54 remaining brought Kenyon within 10-7, and while the Lords won the ensuing face-off, they were not able to come any closer.

Castignola led the Bishops with 4 goals and Eccles contributed 2 goals and 2 assists.

Junior Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) went the distance in the Bishop goal, making 11 saves in perhaps his finest performance of the season.

Larson led the Lords with 4 goals, while Catlin finished with a goal and an assist.

David Page stopped 12 shots in the Kenyon cage.
