Ohio
Wesleyan 13, Whittier 11
April
3, 2007
Junior
midfielder Chris Eccles (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) had a goal and
3 assists during a key 5-0 second-half run that gave Ohio Wesleyan breathing
room, and the Bishops held off a fourth-quarter Whittier rally to defeat
the Poets in non-conference play on Tuesday at Selby Field.
With the Bishops leading, 8-7, midway through the third quarter, Eccles
found sophomore attacker Eric Turner (Columbus/Dublin Scioto) for a score
to make it a 9-7 game. Eccles then hit freshman attacker Rob Young (Langhorne,
Pa./Council Rock South) for a man-up goal with 4:41 remaining, and 32
seconds later, scored a man-up goal off a Turner feed.
Young found Turner for a score with :06 left in the quarter to make it
12-7, and freshman attacker Chris Ehlinger (Radnor, Pa.) scored off an
Eccles pass early in the fourth quarter to give the Bishops a 13-7 lead.
The Poets answered with a Chuck Wagner goal less than a minute later,
then chipped away at the deficit with man-up scores by Dave Gerbarg and
Anthony Lackey to pull within 13-10 with 3:34 remaining. Whittier made
it 13-11 when Gerbarg found Mike Prickett for a score with 1:12 remaining,
but Ohio Wesleyan won the ensuing face-off and was able to run out the
clock, thanks in part to a pair of Whittier penalties.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead on a score by sophomore attacker Dave
Castignola (Dublin/Scioto) less than a minute into the game and made it
2-0 on Turner's goal with 11:03 left in the period.
Whittier then reeled off 3 straight scores to take a 3-2 lead midway through
the quarter, and the teams traded goals to leave the Poets holding a 4-3
lead after the first period.
Freshman midfielder Craig Aronoff (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) scored
24 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4. Eccles followed
with back-to-back goals, and junior midfielder Trevor Jones (Flanders,
N.J./West Morris Mendham) added a goal midway through the period to give
the Bishops a 7-4 lead.
Whittier closed to within 7-6 at halftime, and the teams traded goals
to open the third quarter and set up the final 22 minutes of action.
Eccles led the Bishops with 4 goals and 4 assists. Turner finished with
3 goals and an assist and Ehlinger added 2 goals and an assist.
Junior Ryan Perone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) went the distance
in the Bishop goal, posting 10 saves.
Lackey led the Poets with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Gerbarg finished
with 2 goals and 3 assists.
Ben Brown stopped 12 shots in the Poet cage.
